i have this past paper to do, but i can do most of it, just a couple of questions i am stuck on..

"A straight line passed through the points A(0,2) and B(3,17)"
"a) Show that the gradient of AB is 5"
"b) Write dow the equation of this line"

and it has given me a table of results, first column price, then frequency, and it asks " calculate an estimate of the mean price of these cars"

does this mean i have to find the midpoint of the prices, as they are like 5000<t<8000 and then multiply by the frequency, then add all of the results up and divide by the ammount of people???

sorry this is in this section, i didnt really know where to put it :)

thanks

Gradient = (Change in Y)/(Change in X) = (17-2)/(3-0) = 5

Equation of a line = mx + c where m = gradient and c = the point it intersect the y axis.
So = 5x + 2

Edit: Also by my figuring you are correct about how to work out the mean. Find the midpoint of each category of prices, multiply by frequency and then add all of these totals together. Then divide by total number of people. :)

y=mx+c

to calculate the gradient.^^

mean= add all the figures up and divide by how many cars there are.

eg, 3 cars @ £45, £40, £35

£120/ 3 cars = £40

never mind curiosity beat me to it lol.

I did do A level maths so you would hope I could cover GCSE lol. :) Good luck in the coming months!

Also AAron's explanation of mean is incorrect for the type of data you have. You're way of doing it is correct. :)

I got a B at As-level maths and my cousin whom is 13 asked me a mathematical question the other day and it took me 5 mins to figure it out as I was so use to algebra not numbers.

lol, glad i havnt picked maths at A level, its hell to me- just be glad when i have finished, one good thing though is that i only have to get 35% on the final paper to get a B :) or 9% to get a C or 68% to get an A

thanks people
