I have a 25g tank, i am looking to buy guppies, cardinal tetra, rummy nose tetra, and some corys. Will this make a good tank? This is my first tank so just want everything to go right.
Any advise would be fab. Thanks

I personally wouldn't go for live bearers...ever. Choosing your fish is all personal preference of course, but the reason I steer away from live bearers is just down to the sheer number of fry you can end up with.

Other than that your community ideas sound good. Have you decided if you want a centrepiece fish(s)? For example a pair of honey gouramis.

hey Sarah

I cant see any immediate plans with that stocking, what numbers of each were you thinking?

Most aquatics shops keep live bearers seperate so they can't breed in the shop, so it would be easy for you to go for all one sex

Go for all male guppies, otherwise you should be okay depending on the actual numbers of each.

Its in the process of cycling, but im doing pretty well as ive got all my friends gravel and filter pads, so plenty of good bacteria :D

Ill take the cardinal advise into hand thanks :)

And i wasnt planning on breeding any of the fish, just getting male guppys, i dont really want all the hassle of finding homes etc.

I hadnt thought about a centre piece fish, but anyone any ideas? Are honey gouramis big?

Oh and i dunno, maybe 5 guppies and 5 of each tetra? I was planning on getting the guppy first so theyre a big bigger and the tetra hopefully wont peck at them

Its just in the design stage lol

Thanks
Sarah

A small group of guppies with a larger group of each tetra will work better. The guppies really don't shoal much and the tetras do. The tetras often look better in larger groups. In a nice small tank like yours, I would be tempted to go with a "sparkling gourami". They don't get big enough to cause problems and are very nice fish. Another option is rasboras but they are best in groups, not as singles.

well id say about 3 honey gouramis, one male and two females, which only grow to about 2inch max.

cant male guppies soon turn into female guppies to breed though? could end up in lots of fry whichever way :/ hmmm...

id say 3 honey gouramis and some rasboras (above) about 7. then id get some little corys or ottos which are bottom dwellers (clean your gravel and ottos suck on your glass too.)

heres a pic of a honey gourami - my favourite fish :)

If you want some shoaling fish for a tank that size. I think a larger shoal of 1 species would look great compared to a couple small shoals. I would suggest a shoal of 15+ small tetras of some sort. If you want something a bit different, try and get some Buck Tooth Tetras, about 10-15 of them would work great, they are a VERY TIGHT shoaling fish, among the best.

Just some ideas.

Guppies cannot change sex. Their sex is determined genetically. Very few fish, but some cichlids do not have a sex based on genetics so they can change and do when one of the sexes is absent, but most, maybe all, livebearers that we keep have a genetic sex determination.

Thanks oldman47 :) thats a relief as i dont really want fry :)
Everyone has really great ideas lol! thankyou so much! I really like the honey gouramis im just getting a bit worried about over stocking.

Im looking at some pygmy corys so i can get a few, i hear theyre socialble? Maybe 6?
About 3 male guppies
15 tetra of some kind
and possibly a gourami, do they like company?

Will any of these fish be bothered by my filter? Its quite strong, a fluval 3+ and the tank is just under 25g? Ive tried turning it down but even on the lowest setting it blows my plants about.

Thanks
Sarah

We have a tank with some all male guppies in and they are fab. Only problem is one of them keeps making some most unwanted advances on the others... We have neon tetras in the same tank and both species spend a lot of time playing in the filter current so I can only assume they enjoy it (though somone more knowledgable may correct me :) ) Cherry shrimp are an amazing addition.
