i went to chinatown today, and my mom wanted to get some goldfish to eat the mosquitos larvae inside a big bucket. my dad told her not to get anything, cause its not worth it and they will die. i tell her to get 1 small if she really wants it. my mom buys 20. i then yell at her, and then she says, oh, if they die it doesnt matter, they were only 1 dollar for 10, and you can feed them to your fish. :grr: its like she has no brain! she takes a look at my fish once a week, and she still doesnt even notice that most of my fish dont eat other fish and are smaller than the feeders.anybody know a way to make my mom less stubborn?

As soon as one of the goldfish dies, leave it sitting in the fridge for her to find.

You could bring home 20 puppies and tell her that feeding them will be ok, as soon as one starves the others will eat him. :-(

Seriously, I am sorry, but it doesn't sound like she cares. It is very hard to MAKE someone care if they don't already.

I don't know if this will work or not, but maybe if she could become attached to one fish, she would be a little more caring. Like if she had her very own little Betta to care for, then she would b more sensitive to the others, atleast in the future :dunno:

That's a pretty good suggestion, albeit not very practical

Maybe you could mention that analogy to her and try to get her to understand that lives aren't something you should just throw away.

Some people just don't apreciate finned pets. People get attached to things they interact with such as mammals. Explain to her using an analogy with puppies (putting 20 puppies ina small cage, they will die).

The more difficult it is communicating with something, the harder it is to relate to it. You can relate to your friends & family easier than, say, someone from Budapest, all because of the communication thing. It doesn't make the Hungarian any less a person then you, it's just a communication issue.

It works the same way with people communicating with dogs, cats, & fish. It's easier to communicate with a dog or cat than a fish, thus easier to relate to them. It doesn't make them any less a living thing, it's just a communication issue.

Tolak is right. But i also believe its an educational point of view. Its all to do with knowledge.

Try and educate your mother on the bases of fish keeping and fish care, then she will understand how and why her purchase was irresponsible and possible fatal to those 20 goldies. Print a small article or a few pagres on goldfishcare and maintenance and make her read it. :)

PS. couldnt you take 19 back? and leave 1?

edited for content. Sorry these people just make me mad.

Here's a decent one. Less graphic than my original post but pretty good none the less.

Buy a saint bernard puppy and a dog house. Put the dog on a 2 ft. leash attached to the dog house. Go feed and water him every day. Imagine what this scenario will be like in say 2 years.

The dog will not be able to lie down without being covered in "EX-Dogfood" he will be horribly stunted from lack of excercise and if he is not yet he will soon be dead.

edit: why doesn't she just empty the bucket. That'll get rid of the moquito's without killing any fish. Hmm guess I'm contradicting myself here a bit. If all life is equal then the mosquito's shouldn't be killed senselessly either. Then again with the views of self-defense taken into account by killing the mosquito's you are saving your own life and that of those you care for. Soooo dump the bucket.

Accidently break her tank, if she doesnt really care about fish then she wont bother replacing it and the cycle will be broken.

I don't think she has a tank CFC. I believe it's just a bucket with rainwater in it that has bred mosquito's. I don't fully understand what she planned on doing with them when the mosquito's got eaten but I think she was planning on feeding them to dorkhedeos' fish, which is ok by me. It seems that either this was her plan or she was just gonna wait for them to starve.

edit: That analogy wasn't really very good on second thought. I like the 20 puppies one better. fits the situation.

beleive it or not, goldfish are used as feeder fish for larger fish.

but back to the topic,

why not secretly take them back when she isnt looking?

If you can't take them back, maybe build a temporary 'pond' with a big rubbermaid or whatever you call it container? Or offer one at a time to lfs's and say they died?

i dont know why, but nobody in my family cares about animals. everybody on my dads side of the family can raise animals really well, but the animals are for food  ive been to my dads house in china and it was only one room, smaller than my room with one bed. about 10 people had to live there  so basicly, if they didnt take care of their animals, they went hungry. i cant get a dog, im allergic to dog hair, and my parents say they smell. i cant bring anything back, because my lfs has no refunds. so a big rubbermaid container would be ok for the fish? maybe i can bring the goldfish back once they get bigger and sell them back to the store.
