forget returning them--just give them back. if your mom was just going to let $1.90 of them die, she can't complain if a $1.90 mysteriously transport themselves back to the store.

You say the lavae are in a big bucket - what's it for?

Could you not remove the lavae yourself and feed to your fish? Or remove useing a chemical - depending on what the "big bucket." is used for.

I think the hard part is trying to change someone who is older and set in thier ways.

Like pica_nuttalli says you could return some back to the store.

Thats my two penneth anyway.
Hope all goes well

I can't believe noone has mentioned the technique I would use on my mum in this situation (o.k, so I kind of can. I am a real b*stard when I want to be  ).

I would tell her she is a right w*nker before proceeding to tell her how much of a f****** d****** she is for the next three hours while enlightening her on the finer points as to why she is as well as the basic mechanics of fishkeeping. If she decided she didn't care to listen I would tell her to sit down, shut up and listen to what I was saying because God knows I had to listen to enough of her drivel growing up.

Trust me, speaking from experience, this technique well and truly works - without it my mother (and the rest of my family for that matter) would have driven me batty years ago

I'm 33 years old and if my mother were still alive (god bless her), she would knock me across the room if I attempted to talk to her like that!! I think Dragonscales idea is good, but I'd go about it in a totally different way. Ask your mother if you can have a talk. Tell her how you feel about what she's doing. Have this forum printed out to show her, and maybe any other pertinent information you can find to show her. Ask her why she feels she needs goldfish to eat the larvae when there are so many different ways to take care of it. Hopefully she'll listen to what you have to say. She may not agree with you, but maybe you can come up with some kind of understanding.

If I talked to my mom like that (when I still lived with her) I would have been grounded for 1 2 3 4 5 no about 10000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 years.

mosquito fish maybe? just make sure you don't release them into the wild.

 You just aren't using enough assertiveness.

All of my family know with just one look whether or not to keep pushing an issue. 99% of the time I am about as happy go lucky and calm a person as you could ever meet, but given the right circumstances I can be pretty nasty (takes a bit though). I have always been a rather vocal person on subjects which get my goat though and have been told I have a look of pure demonic malice when angry so guess this helps keep most people I know in check, even my dad

Dorkhedeos, maybe I missed this part, but what is the bucket being used for that water is being kept in it and becoming a mosquito breeding ground? If it has mosquitos in it, why can't she just dump it out??? Was she planning to use the water for something?

wow, aint this great? the fish in the bucket died, and my mom bought some more to replace them  i went to china town today and bought a betta in a petshop next to the fish shop. when i opened the trunk, i saw a bag of goldfish, and i was like what the hell is this? then she acted like she didnt know anything about them
