But there is chance of you bieng stung by those "fresh water RAYs".is there a chance of you bieng stung.......poor steve irwen we are all missing you :rip:

If I;m right as well Steve Irwin was just unlucky cos the ray pierced his heart with the spike as opposed to stinging him??

theyll only sting if you stand on them like in the case of steve irwin...although some have said he didnt stand on it but still he stood over it.

Either way I think what happened was inevitable - long live real naturalists who actually like to see nature from a safe and non-interfering distance and seeing WILD ANIMALS act as they should :good:

Anyway, would love to see some piccies of the ray! Was it from a private dealer?

Cheers

I hope so.... I;ve kept allkinds of fish for 18 years but I keep checking him hoping hes ok.... I just want him to flourish

With good water quality, as you have, they are actually quite hardy...exceptionally intolerant of chemicals but and would recomend poly filter in your filtration system

First of all, i would remove any ornaments on the bottom of your tank, The ray needs a big footprint to thrive.

Also you substrate looks rather rough and sharp, rays prefer sand so they can hide easily, however pea gravel is suitable as i know Mark7616 had that (i saw it myself)

T1KARMANN has rays he knows lots so point him to this thread, so does cane76 but he ain't been online since end of july :S

I was going to say too.. i would lose the substrate, fine sand or bare bottom tank. Personally i gave up with substrate because my two were absolute gits for injuring themselves. I had them in completely bare tanks and they still managed to injure themselves. Again, fine or no substrate and make sure you have heater guards!!

I would avoid plecs and anything too aggressive, though saying that, my discus caused more problems than anything else put together! The little spots looked like food and they kept pecking at him. Though more gutting was that the ray stung the stunning 15" Pearl Arowana and killed him, that was gutting but the aro spooked and bashed into the ray.

Foodwise: mussel, cockle, smelt/lancefish, prawns, locusts/crickets/mealworms, Hikari Massivore Delite sinking pellets (takes a while to convince them but soon everything eats them!).

I also had a big bottle of Melafix on hand, it works a miracle when added once a week with water changes for all the bumps and scrapes that the lil devils get.

cheers for the tips,I;m almost done closinga 4ft jewel tan down which has a sand substrate so my plan is at the weekend to somehow get the gravel out and replace with sand and take the bigger stones out
There is a fair amount of bogwood wand plec cves in there I shall take them out as well.

OUCH, I will never swim in the sea again  but all what you people just said does not make covinienced so easily, YUP STING RAY...hence the name hahaha lol.

He looks awesome up on the glass like that!

Good luck swapping out the gravel, reminds me of when I changed from play sand to black gravel on my 5ft *shudder*
