I have a tank that will soon be empty and I'm trying to decide what to put in it. The resident wild caught bluegill has outgrown it after nearly a year and is being prepared for his new home in an outdoor pond.

I was looking at this chart and my tank doesn't seem to fit the norm. The dimensions are 24" long x 12" wide x 11" deep. This works out to barely 15 gal and yet it has the same 24 x 12 footprint as the 25 gal tank in the chart.

Originally, I though I might be hard pressed to comfortably house a pair of rams or maybe checkerboards but now I'm thinking that it should be OK. In fact I'm beginning to think about Flags or even Kribs. Or is that going too far? What do you think?

The 25 gallon has a footprint of 24x12. You said your tank has a footprint of 12x11. This is very different. One is suitable, one is not.

This has got me to thinking that perhaps tank size recommendations for NW cichlids should be measured as "floor space area" rather than in gallons. I have 2 square feet (288 sq in) in this tank.

usua;y when you say a 20 gallon tank everyone knows the foot print and then suggest what will work in that size foot print. Basically it is the foot print that is what is used, but your tank is diffrent from a standard one, so you need to say that.

An example: You can have an oscar in a 50 gallon tank, but not a 55. Why? Because of the foor prints being diffrent, the 50 going back more allowing for the oscar to turn around.

The tank size of all cichlids should go like that. Jump to the African forum and see how many believe that since a 30 gallon 3 foot tank is good for some mubna, so is a two foot 29 gallon
