I'm setting up my new 60g tank and I was looking for the white play sand I got for my 30g a few years ago. I got it at Home Depot, but they don't seem to have that sand anymore, unfortunately. So, I found some sand at Lowe's that seemed like it would work. It's tan, not white. I cleaned it pretty well, but when I was moving my magnetic algae scraper around the tank I noticed that tiny flecks of iron were sticking to it. I was under the impression that ferrous materials are a big no no in a tank, correct? So, what else can I use without draining my wallet? What about sandblasting media? Any ideas?? Not too picky on color, but I'd love to have black...

And I also plan to have plenty of sand dwelling fish (loaches, cats, etc.)

Try pool filter sand. It's a silica sand and good value too. It's heavier than play sand so doesn't stay in the water column, and a lot cleaner too so doesn't need as much rinsing out.

I have just replaced my sand with this and I'm very happy with it :)
