Thanks for the insight, had a look at the 'anubis', can't be it has been burried in sand and quite apart from rotting its has grown lots of new roots.
One thing i've noticed is number 2, there is a deffinite point where the plant had grown to BEFORE it went into my tank. That has now hardend off and browned with a good 2-3 inches of fresh bright green growth on top?
Number one is now almost at the waterline
