Another Dead Plec

due to the tannins in my water i did a 90ltr water change on my tank which is 300l.

2 days later i did the same again(which was yesterday). i temperature matched the water and used biotopol plus to condition the water

the lights have just come on for the day and i have found my snowball plec dead.

i seem to remember my gold nugget dying from a similar thing.

mywater is 0 nitrite, 0 ammonia.

is this common for plecs to die all the time?

my candy stripe and leopard frog plecs are fine

Did you test the pH; kH; gH of the tannin water and the fresh dechlorinated? Wondering if there was a pH or hardness shock involved here during the water changes.

Had you been able to observe the Snowball in detail recently to ensure it was in good health? Nocturnal catfish are not easy to check on, I have to camp out in my garage with very dim lighting at 2200ish to see my Synodontis come out of their roosts and check they appear healthy.

Golden Nugget and Snowball Plecs are not what I persoanlly think of as "bullet proof" catfish, just like Medusa Plecs (one of my wishlist fish that I would never dare try in our hard water in Hampshire). They have tricky requirements, in that the water needs to be well oxygenated (so a good 8x or more turnover with lots of surface rippling) but they also need 25C plus temps which lower the potential oxygen saturation levels. In addition, they are softwater catfish.

think your right, wood must have made the water low ph then the tap water here is upper 7's.

should have done 10% daily.
