Hi guys i have a 5x2x2 currently going through a fishless cycle and just wondering how this stocking sounded ? Too much or too little ?

8x clown loach
2x bala shark
1x electric blue ram
2x platys
1x bristlenose plec

Any advice would be appreciated :)

Sharks like to be kept in groups, don't get less than 6, they are also very fast, skittish fish, 5 foot might not be ideal for later years when they are adult.

I'd say you have lots more room assuming you got a couple of good filters pumping away.

Thanks for the reply , ill have 2 all pond solutions external 2000l filters running on the tank i have no experience running big tanks so im hoping this will be good enough .

Any othet suggestions on a fish similar to the sharks that would be comfartable in there ? Im building it around my clowns really so i suppose i could just up them to 10 :)

the clown loaches and bala sharks will eventually get too big for a 5x2x2 and as said they really need to be in groups so with their potential size they will fill your tank on their own  many people buy these species when small not realising their potential size... it doesnt happen overnight but both will get very big fish.

its quite a mix of fish that i wouldnt really put together tbh. is there any reason why you are looking at these? is it just because you like the look of them?

if you want bigger fish dont forget they can grow very fast if cared for well and will need lots of room. the cute 2 inch oscar can soon become an 8 inch brute within a few months....
if you are looking at smaller fish like the rams, platys and bristlenose then i would keep to smaller sized fish throuout the stocking with maybe the adition of a few angelfish, discus etc. something that doesnt get too big and isnt a threat to the smaller species.

the rams will need a higher temp 28-30 to thrive and can be a little sensitive. many people buy these and they are dead within a few months, maybe weeks as they dont know their needs.
this temp however isnt a bad thing as many fish will tolerate it just do a bit of research first. rams are commonly kept with discus as they share the same water parameters.
if you dont want it too hot then there is much more choice at the 26 degrees mark and most things you see in the lfs will be fine at this temp.

while your tank is cycling you have the time to research compatability of fish species not just for temperament but for water conditions etc etc. ask away with any questions and get as much info as poss before buying the fish.

a 5x2x2 is a great size tank with numerous stocking possibilities so its not going to be easy. just remember big tank dont have to have big fish.

Thanks mattlee i should have mentioned before that i already have a 3ft tank with my ebr who is around 6 months now , 2 platys , bn and 3 small clowns the only reason i bought the 5ft was so the clowns had somewhere bigger and so that i could up the numbers. i am aware that eventually when they are fully grown i will have to rehome as they will get too big :( i just really enjoy keeping them and if im right it will be many years before they outgrow the 5ft ?

I've got 17 Clown Loaches in my 5 foot tank, along with 10 Zebra Loaches (which might be another fish you could stock in your tank). The Clowns are young, none are over 5 inches yet, but i've seen a couple of them do some amazing growth spurts over the last 6 months. I'll be upgrading to a 6 or 7 footer this time next year. If that helps you any? I "think" i could get away with it for 2 years but i don't want to push my luck.

I've also stocked some fish that don't have a huge life span so when they start to die off, i wont be replacing them and it will become a "bigger fish" tank, rather than tiddlers. ;)

...and im not counting the 60 neons that ended up in there that got eaten by my firemouths within 2 weeks flat. :D

WOW 60 neons in 2 weeks :0! Good going lol ,

My clowns are only small atm the biggest is 4inch the others are 2-3 so i think if i buy smallish clowns to up the numbers i should have a good while before i have to rehome although i can see myself going the same way as you and upgrading to a 6-7ft so that i can keep them lol i really like the look of those zebra loach too :)
