Is my tank big enough for a single Angelfish. It is a 180 litre tank & i have a deep layer of sand substrate.

Tank Information

length 100cm
width 40cm

so surface area of 4000cm

hight from substrate to water level

front of tank 37cm
back of tank 32com

fairly well planted

????

Your water height is supposed to be about 43cm(17 inches) and tank volume 30 US gallons or more.. but maybe it should get more discussion, I don't always think of it as hard and fast as some do. WD

looks fine for one angelfish....your almost at 50 gallons

Yep, a single Angelfish would be fine in your tank. Altum Angels are too big for your tank but Common angelfish are fine :good:

You will need to post some more pics Tom when you get stocked.

Keith.

I'd say your tank is tall enough (just!). As above though, not for Altum Angels (Pterophyllum Altum) so avoid these (although they are quite rare anyway, so its probably not an issue).

Thanks for the replys, I will have to research the types of Angels around. My 4 year old daughter wants one that looks like Nemo's tankmate (but fresh rather than salty). I have seen some silver ones with black stripes also the koi type look nice.

It's easy Tom, just as BTT said, avoid Altums and -everything- else is normal (just with variations in colors and fin patterns) and you'd probably not get Altums accidentally anyway as they'd probably cost a fortune!

Was looking at angles in my lfs today, Think i will settle on the silver with black stripes.

koi angels are also pretty cool. i had one that survived 1 3/4 years! when i was 10! it was one of the fish that cycled my tank! bad decision!

this is also what i'm looking to get! i looked at my LFS and they had one tank with about 20 1/2inch angels, of mixed, but there were a couple of nice natural looking ones like you are looking for. I'm going to check a few times to see different batches, and see if what i saw can be even better

My 2yr male angels height from fin tip to fin tip it currenty around 25cm and he is not full grown nor a veiltail. He is kept in a 46cm high tank. I personally would not keep him in a 37cm high tank, would be a bit cramped and give him limited manauveuing room. Eventually i will be looking a an even higher tank to keep him growing to his potential

But juvenilles should be ok for a while at least

Yes, the generally accepted lore (and what I've had direct experience with in the past in my tanks that had both angels and cardinals or neons) is that it helps greatly if you introduce the small tetras first and make sure they are comfortable and established before introducing the young angels.. and the second major thing is indeed making sure that it's quite young angels that are introduced.

There are various feeling among experienced keepers I believe about the extent to which the fact that they are young cichlids and simply get used to (or learn in a sense) that the tetras are part of their normal environment.. versus.. the theory that it's simply that their mouths are too small (lol) that explains why they are much less likely to eat the tetras (or at least not eat them until they are very much older angels.)

It of course must be understood that these small tetras (which under natural conditions live in shoals of up to millions of fish) are the natural food of the angels in the Amazon basin. But many people, including myself, have kept them together for pretty long successful periods.

I'd of course bow to any thoughts that Tolak has on this, as of course he is an angel breeder and probably our top expert in the area.
