Recently became interested in Angelfish and woundered if there were different names for different "Colour Variants".
Maybe someone can put a "Variety" name against mine.

I have two of these. Almost identical.

And the "Gold One" in the pot.
Had two but one sadly died yesterday.

Many Thanks,

I beleive the one in the second pic is considered a koi, don't know what to call the first one though...

Have a look here, they just updated their site; http://www.theangelfishsociety.org/phenotype_library_2007/

First is some variant of a leopard, perhaps smokey. Second appears to be a marble ghost.

Koi are gold marble blushers, there's no blush to the second angel.

Here's another good link, lost of research behind this one; http://theangelfishsociety.org/genetics.htm

Shows how much I know

I just know that they are pretty, and at least I was kind of close with the second one

Edit: Thanks for posting the links, I got myself an education on it!

Thanks Tolak,

Very interesting links. Have just sent them an E-mail. Will wait and see. :good:

My Kois didn't have any gold colouring down their sides, they were white with a gold/orange crown and black markings. I have two angels like the 2nd one in your pics, that *do* have all over gold/"metallic" colouring with the sparse black markings over the top.

Here's my old Kois:

Haven't got any pics of the new guys yet (well no decent ones lol) but they, like yours, are gold with black markings, rather than orange, white and black.

I think the new ones are gold marbles Kathy if I remember rightly (when Paul brought them). Koi dont have any gold on them, they are white, yellow, black and blush.

Which is what I think the OPs gold one is a gold marble too - I thought ghost angels look like this:
http://www.angelswest.com/silver_ghost.htm

My one that was identified as a ghost elsewhere had one faded out stripe (he's the one on the left):

On the left again (sorry for the blurry pic but at least it's more realistic colours as the flash washed out the last one):

Sorry, just got to giggle at the fact that he and Goldie were the same size back then (Goldie is now mahoooosive probably double his size lol).

But to be honest, I know sod all about angelfish varieties. It would be really nice to have a thread with a list (and piccies) of them all to refer to as a sticky, wouldn't it?

Just had a reply from "theangelfishsociety.org", this is what they had to say.

"Hi Gary,
What a lovely little angelfish! I am not sure, but I think this is a leopard lace. Leopard angelfish are spotted like this when they are small, but the color will fill in as they mature and they will not be spotted as adults. The dark color on the fins and tails look like it has one dose of “darkâ€￾ which brings out the pattern in the fins and tails quite strikingly, The genotype is probably D/+ - Z/+ - Sm/Sm, which means one dose of dark, one dose of zebra, and two doses of smokey. We do not have any of these up on the phenotype library yet. At present we are focusing on phenotypes that require genes from two of the color-influencing loci, and this little guy looks like he has three color genes involved. If you look at the leopard page, that will give you an idea of what he might look like as an adult – except he will be darker, and the fins and tails will have the black color highlighting the pattern instead of the browner of the leopard.
Did your angels come from a breeder who might be able to confirm their genetics, or were they a lucky find at the pet store?
- Tamar"

Tolak, looks like you know your stuff regarding Angels.

Thanks,

Gary.

LisaLQ,

They didn`t mention anything about the second one, I`ll E-mail them back and ask their opinion.

Oh, and took a trip to the Lfs to get a replacement for the one that died and was advised that all of their Angels come from Checkoslovakia. Asked why they didn`t buy from local breeders and they told me it was cheaper from abroad, about 95% of ALL their stock is imported. Obviously only in it for the money.

Gary.

LisaLQ,
Just had a reply back from "theangelfishsociety",
" Gary, Your angelfish is a gold marble, pretty fish. I hope that helps ya out".

But to be honest, I know sod all about angelfish varieties.

Seems you were right in your prediction.

Hope this helps everyone, It certainly helps me.

Thanks.

Just received this with reference to the gold one in the pot (second pic).

"Gary,

The fish in your photo looks like a gold marble. I could tell more definitively if you could send a photo that includes a good view of the dorsal fin, and if you would tell me how old this fish is. From the photo, it appears to still be quite young – probably about nickel or quarter sized body.

A “koiâ€￾ angelfish is simply a gold marble blushing angelfish. As a young juvenile, the gill area on a koi will be pink, which is because the gill covers are translucent and the color of the blood-rich gills will show through. The body will also appear somewhat translucent so that it is easier to see the silhouettes of the internal organs. As a koi matures, the gill plates generally become more opaque so that you can’t see the blushing. An adult gold marble will have horizontal striations in the dorsal fin, whereas the striations will be absent in a koi. An adult koi will develop random silvery iridescent patches on its body that will not be seen on the adult gold marble. As an adult, the white areas on the koi will be distinctly white, instead of the off-white or pale gold of a gold marble, so if you see a koi and a gold marble side by side, the difference in coloration will be obvious.

- Tamar"

Hope this helps,

Gary.

Aaah that's a great description - thanks for sharing it with us! :)

Your fish are beautiful by the way - these are my remaining ones (rehomed one of the pairs recently):

Zorro - we originally thought "he" was a male, but then "he" surprised us by pairing off with our newest one and laying lots of eggs (subsequently hatched and got to free swimming stage before the community fish ate them lol):

Zorro's babies (excuse filthy tank):

Zorro with her boyfriend, Bender (so named because of his bent fin - also after the Futurama character) looking after their babies:

Goldie my imaginatively named big gold male (in my tank):
100307goldie.jpg

And a naff pic of his girlfriend, Spot (they also spawn regularly - just the eggs are eaten straight away by our parrot fish):
100307spot.jpg

And the pair that I rehomed (they spawned once but Zorro and Bender attacked them and ate their eggs as it was at the same time as they spawned and their batches were within inches of each other):

Mrs Wembley (the gold marble) and Lucifer (silver ghost):
lucifermrswembley.jpg

The silver that we never got round to naming, he/she never paired off and was the odd one out and went to a new home with Mrs W and Lucifer (in a seperate tank):

As we speak, Zorro and Bender have spawned again, the night before last. Doing a fine job again, no doubt they'll hatch and be well looked after til the other fish gobble them up again  Goldie and Spot are going to be looking for a new home soon.
