I have a 20 gallon under construction and was hoping to plant it and add two angel fish...how big do angel fish get? any special care? thanx!

Is it a 20 tall or long? Angelfish get taller than most fish so they need a tank that is 18" high to accomodate their long fins. I don't know the dimensions of a 20 tall, but I'm pretty sure a 20 long isn't going to be tall enough.

Sorry :/

18" tall is the absolute minimum,
due to the length of their ventral fins.

My pair have outgrown my 34 Gallon 20" tall planted setup, they're about three years old now. They become too aggressive when spawning (every 10 to 14 days) and just look too big for my tank size IMO. I'd recommend at least a 40 Gallon tall tank for adults, obviously a lot smaller for juveniles but bear in mind their eventual size.

It also depends on if they are standard fin, or veil. I keep standards in a 20 tall no problem. Veils need a 29 or bigger. That is just for 2 angels, with a few corys & a plec to help keep the tank clean. Anything else makes for a tank that I think is too busy.

As far as special care, they like a little warmer temp. I keep my adults at 80F. A diet of just flakes doesn't cut it. They need some brine shrimp or bloodworms a couple of times a week. Frequent water changes & good food makes for nice healthy angels.

my tank is 20 tall, so this is good to hear ..im sad to hear they might outgrow their tank.

I have two angels in a 20g xtra tall (think it's like 2 feet tall). I had them in a 30g tall but they were always huddled in one corner protecting their eggs any way. They rarely ventured to the other side of the tank. Now they have their own home with a few snails. :)

With how many cories? Would 5 be alright? This is for my 33 gallon.

I want to get 2 angels, but I'm concerned about them getting along. I know the chances of getting a pair of male and female is slim, so if I get 2 males, will they fight for the tank when older? What about if I get 2 females?

Also, will 2 angelfish of different variety get along? I think so, but I'm just checking... I use frozen bloodworms and brine shrimp, algae tabs, flake food, gammarus, freeze dried tubifex worms and I have and a big can of Tetramin Cichlid pellets. Would I need anything else to supplement their diet?

Yes, 5 will be fine. 2 males or 2 females *could* get into territory issues since yours is a smaller tank - it depends more on their personality. Even a mated pair could have territory issues b/c at spawning time they can get a little rough. Make sure it's well planted and there are enough hiding spots and it should be fine. As I said on your other thread, the best way to get a mated pair is to get 6 juvies and let them pair off and then re-home the other 4.

2 angels of different varieties will get along just fine. Other than altums, angels are all the same fish - their colors are just due to different genetics.
