im doing some research on angelfish for a project and would like to know your thoughts on them.i have done some reading on them but would like to know what people who keep them think.
who has angelfish?
I have two about 4 months old, a gold pearlscale and a koi veiltail they have spawned once. HOWEVER, tomorrow I should take delivery of 4 platinum Phillipine Blues. Coming through the mail so I'll let you know how that goes.
if you do what else do you have in your tank with them?
My gold and koi live in a 60 gallon tall tank with a keystone cichlid, 2 bolivian rams, 7 congo tetras, 4 corys, 1 bristlenose plec, and a pair of apisto caratuioides in a planted tank. Remember that angels like amazon swords and anubias with large leafs for spawning and I think if calms them too.. that is just anecdotal though.
have you had aggression problems?
Mine are still young. I lucked out with the gold and koi because they are a pair. When they spawned there was defensiveness protecting the eggs. My normally peaceful and floating angels became quite quick moving and assertive. Very interesting to see them turn sideways and then speed along toward their target. I did not see or witness contact between them and others, just chasing away. They are still very young and small, about 1.25 and 1.5 inches of body right now. I'll probably see something more substantial down the line.
do you have to have a pair or can you have just 1 angelfish?
All I've read is that a single angel is fine and may be preferable if your pair or threesome start fighting amongst themselves.
are males more aggressive than females?
Good question, don't know. SO FAR I would say it is about equal, but again, mine are young. Also realize that they are very difficult to sex before they spawn so difficult if not impossible to go to the store and buy young ones of known sex.
is it best to have 2 males or 2 females? or 1 of each?
I don't know so will leave this to others.
are they aggressive when they are young?
My experience is that the aggression starts with spawning but I had my first spawn several weeks ago and they were only 3-4 months old and still quite small.
what is the minimum size tank that they require??
I would say a 30 gallon but a tall tank that is more than 18 inches high. Remember that with all that finnage and adult will get to between 5-7 inches from top to bottom. So height is the most important but they are big fish so a pair in a 30 gallon would be my recommendation and my opinion.
how long does it take for them to get fully grown?
A couple of years?
