Im planning on keeping;

1 RTBS
6 Albino/Bronze Corys
1 Brazilian Panaque
1 Bulldog Catfish (or if i cant get one, a bristlenose plec)
8 Guppies
4/5 Angelfish

All this is in a Juwel Vision 180

Is there any specific set up i need for my Angelfish. I can't find any info on this anywhere.

I really like the rocky look of Mbuna tanks, and figured that would look good with my catfish etc.

So will my Angelfish need a more planted environment? And does it matter that the plants would be artificial?

Thanks guys.

Angels can have a wide variety of personality. Some are shy, some are as bold as anything else. I like to have a section with tall plants and a section of more open water. Angels get to be pretty tall fish, so some good open swimming area is going to suit them better than a fully decorated tank. The section of taller plants will give some refuge if you get a shy one and some refuge for the guppies if not. I've seen lots of different looks for angel tanks - you could do a custom built rockscape with caves and nooks and crannies and then some driftwood and some plants for a nice, natural look.

First off, all those Guppies will get eaten, end of story there isn't a way around that RTBS may even contribute to that problem. Secondly I have no clue what a Brizilian Panaque is. With all tanks live plants are best. Angelfish prefer a Ph of 6-7.0 but can live in higher. I wouldn't recommend a rocky habitat I think they would benefit with a more planted one, although rocks in and about the tank are fine. 40 gallons should be fine with 4 angelfish, you might even get a pair. Angelfish need a tank thats atleast 18' tall.

I assumed the panaque was a sort of pleco...

The baby guppies will definitely get eaten and depending on the temperament of the angels, the guppies may get their fins nipped up, but they may not. Another advantage to getting juvy angels and raising them with the fish you want them to live with...and to keeping them well fed. A friend of mine has angels that she can't keep anything with remotely long fins with, but I've got mine with threadfin rainbows and guppies with no issues.

Fish have personalities, and that's why sometimes things will work in one tank but not another. For instance, I had a "pack" of killer rainbowfish - boesemanis and turquoise, which everyone will tell you are peaceful community fish. For some reason (improper sex ratio most likely), my rainbows were extremely aggressive and harrassed a couple of angels and then turned on my severum!

The guppies are at risk from the angels - if you want to go down this route then definately provide some well planted areas to give them a good chance. As said before, also seriously consider losing the RTBS - notorious fin nipper and will very likely bother your angels and guppies.

Its a risk, you might find they live in harmony but even then things can change overnight.

Oh and by the way, that Bulldog catfish you are talking about is actually a Bulldog pleco (correct?) And that Brazilian Panaque is also in the same family as the plecostomus (spelling?)

Sorry guys, had no internet access over the weekend. Well the tank came today, and i've got one of them alien looking things in there (quite tall with spindly legs, ive seen a few in peoples tanks on here), a cave made out of rocks, two pieces of bogwood, a few rocks layed about, and one corners quite well planted. Sorry i hant got any pictures for you.

Yeah i might give the guppies a miss and go for some barbs instead. Yeah it is a bulldog pleco, i always end up calling it a catfish, sorry.

The tanks cycling at the moment, so when its established im only going to stock it with two angels, and then add two more later on (providing things are good).

Im going to put the RTBS in there, and if everything seems fine then he can stay, if not then a friend of mine said he'd have him.

Thanks for all your help guys :)

p.s. is the tank too small for a silver shark? i know the previous owner had one in there, but i never saw the tank set up.

Silver shark? Is that a Bala? Theres lots of silver colored sharks. Bulldog plecos are fine, don't get too huge, but are ugly as anything IMO. The angels will likely not do well with the RTBS but you can try it non the less. I got a Leporinus Fasciatus and in less than 10 minutes, he hat ripped the fins almost completely off of 4 angelfish. They are similar in temperment. So watch very closely.

i've just googled bala shark, and it looks to be the same as what i'm on about. Would that be okay or would it be too agresive?

Buldog Plecos look beautiful...dont know hat you on about :p

i'm also thinking of adding a Queen Arabesque to the tank aswell (well once its cycled)

I'd really like to have a RTBS in there, and im not too bothered about the guppys.

What do you think would be a good group of shoaling fish?

If i were to lose the angels aswell (and keep the RTBS) what would you suggest as my 'main' fish?

1, dont get silver shark, they get 12".

2, add 4 angels all at the same time

3, get some tetras instead of barbs or guppys

4, Rtbs are aggressive fish. and imo they can only be kept with Large aggressive cichlids. i would lose the rtbs. as it will kill the corys, angels and anything else in the tank but the plecs.

5, Good luck!

haha cheers for number 5. I think im going to need it.

Would i be able to have;

1 Queen Arabesque
1 Royal Panaque
1 Bulldog Plec
1 RTBS
and then maybe a convict or two?

I've seen some cihchlids at my LFS (which only show the latin names for fish, which annoys me) and i noticed some yellow ones (surely there cant be many yellow cihclids :p) and to my very un trained eye looked to be a blue acara.

Would either of these be any good?
if not...what the hell can i keep with a RTBS :p

well, the QA qouldnt work, there to shy and to much of wimps Also the Royals can reach like 15" and will be to big for your tank.

but this would work

1 Bulldog Plec
2 Bristlenose (M+F)
1 RTBS
2 Female Cons OR 2 Female Firemouths OR 1 Severum OR 1 Blue Acara

that would work.

As others have said the RTBS + Angels + Corry's + Guppies is a receipe for disaster.

The plec's should all be fine together but...

A Royal Panaque is a 50cm fish so I'd not advise keeping one in your 180l tank (I'm feeling bad about having a normal common or garden plec in my 270l - but I know when it needs to move I'll have a nice 400l tank for it).

I'd suggest sticking with the Bulldog and the Queen Ab. and leave it at that for the plecs...
