Would one Bristlenose be okay? or do they need to be kept in pairs? The only reason i ask this is that i only have one cave in my tank, and figured that they'd need a cave or something to have as there 'home'.

Im glad convicts would work as initialy they were what i wanted to keep.

I'll try and get a picture up here so you guys can see what my tanks set out like.

one bristlenose OR bulldog wil be fine. then you can get 1/2 cichlids with some tetras/danios etc.

that would make

1 Plec Bristlenose or Bulldog
1 RTBS
3 Female convicts.
8 Congo tetras OR any other tetras/danios you like.

Would i not be able to keep a bulldog and a bristlenose. If not, why not? will they fight or something?

Really liking the idea of a RTBS and three convicts. Quite suprised tetras/danios would go with them...but you guys know best :)

Convicts generally only get homicidal when spawning. So, if you're keeping 3 female cons then sure, they're cichlids, but not homicidal. Tetras and danios are generally going to be fast enough to get out of the way when one of the cons is feeling a bit sassy.

plecs would get real messy. and 2 would only make it worst. not that they'd fight or anything. but if you have a good filtration and all. i'd say go for it. but by doing so, you may have to cut down on other numbers or it'd be overstocking

yeah im going to try and get females, although i have visions of my LFS giving me a male by mistake. Are they easy to sex?

I currently have the standard juwel filter in, with a Fluval 4 Plus running too. I've got a Fluval 3 spare aswell. So i might just put one plec in and see how things go and then decide weather to add another one.

As long as they're big enough to be mature, they're generally easy to sex. The females have red/orange patches on their stomachs and the males do not.

there may be issues with the plecs, but 1 or the other will be best.

Sexing convicts is rather simple. Convict males usually have longer dorsal and anal fins with filaments trailing from the caudal fin upon reaching a mature age. They are often larger than the female. They also tend to grow a nuchal hump. Females are more brightly colored with an orange underside and brighter coloration through the fins.

im sure somewhere on here i asked about keeping my two bolivian rams with them, and i think you guys said no.

Well ive found out why now. I have 3 LFS, one which i hardly buy anything from and just look round as its the nearest, another which i buy my fish from etc, and then another one where i will never buy fish from (if youd been, youd know why) but they tend to be quite cheap with filters etc. Went to buy a heater for a new betta tank iv got, and went to look round the fish and found a tank with Convicts and Rams in. Two rams were still alive, but seemed quite stressed, and then there were 6 dead rams floating about with all the convicts taking nips at them.

So thank god i didnt do that.

yeah rams are mostly peaceful fish and convicts are bigger mean and dont like other fish. Convicts are known for picking on fish many times their size. Convicts are at their worst when spawning so thats another thing to think about. Im sure they are lovly fish and wish you luck with them! :good:

hey again guys. Going to my LFS tomorrow as im after some Albino Corys for another tank, so going to have a look at what theyve got and make sure they'll have everything in for next weekend.

The stockins going to be;

1 Bulldog Plec
3 Female Convicts
1 RTBS
7 or so Neons.

My water test results show that its fully cycled, although i dont want to put fish in till next weekend as im away this week. The goldfish have done a great job of keeping it cycled, although they've dug up all the gravel i spent ages sorting out :p

Heres a pic;

Im tempted to put a tallish plant to go at the back and pretty much all the way up. Its just that the background seems a bit too 'open'.

Let me know what you think :)

Just been to my LFS (and came back with a Pitbull Plec for another tank :p) and the guy theres ordering me my stock.

I asked if they had any convicts in and i got a short laugh, and an answer of no :p

So he's ordering me 3 female convicts, and 1 Bulldog Plec (which they have normaly but they sell them pretty quick so he's saving me one).

They've already got RTBS in so im getting one of them aswell. Still a bit undecided if i'm going to put neon tetras in. Saw some lovely Barbs, but i cant remember what type they were, and can't find them on the internet. They had like a purple/redish band going lengthways on there body if anyone knows :p
