Hey, I really want an Angelfish but I already have 6 neon tetras. I think the neons are pretty much fully grown and the Angefish would be very small from the LFS. Would the Angelfish get used to them before it became big enough to eat them? I do know of people that keep both Angelfish and Neons. Please reply because I'll be leaving for the fish shop in a few hours! Thanks 8)

Neon's are Angelfish food in their natural habitat I believe. They will eat them once they will fit in their mouths

should be fine ive kept them together and theyve all been okay . the angel fish are generally too slow / lazy to bother neons !

if you get little angels and they grow up with the neons they are usually (but not always) fine. If you put a big angel in with the neons it will eat them.

Oh a bit of a split decision there. lol. i think we'll give it a try because I've been to the shop before and the Angel's are very small and if george4 has kept them and they've been fine I think it's worth a go. Plus we have an empty tank that we could put either the neon's or the Angelfish in if there is trouble. Can you keep just a single Angelfish? 8)

you can keep them individually or in groups or pairs. If you want to breed them buy a group of lil ones and grow them up together. When they start to pair off move the pairs to other tanks.

I have read of people having success when they were introduced at the same time but as mentioned, they are the natural prey of angels. It would definitely work for a while but once the angels get larger, you never know. A planted tank with lots of hiding places would definitely help.

On a side not, I see that the tank has a gold sucking loach, AKA gold Chinese algae eater. Once it gets some age and size on it, you will have problems with it attacking the angel and the gouramis ans it stops eatiing algae and prefers to try to suck the slime coat off slow-moving, flat-bodied fish. IMO, they are not suitable for a community tank.

my angel has been fine with neons his whole life. has never eaten one. i introduced the angel after the neons and once the neons were full grown which you seem to be doing. Good luck.

Right I've bought myself the smallest Angelfish in the shop, I'll see how things go! So far it's given the neons no attention whatsoever! 8)

It won't bother them until it is big enough to fit them in it's mouth. That is when the problems will start, if at all.

I think they'll be fine together as long as

There are more neons over angels
The angel is younger then the neons
There are other fish in the tank
You keep the angel well fed

Good luck!

Neons are great, I would love to keep them, but they get eaten so regularly I gave up :D
I have had Angels and Neons together in the past. A 29 gallon tank, one pair of Angels and a school of about 12 Neons. Lived together fine for 6-8 months, then after the Angels laid eggs on a swordplant the Neons disappeared.
I have had Neons victimized by so many fish I only keep them in species tanks, or with other small Tetras.

But you never know. You never know until you try, and Neons only cost about $1.99 a throw
