Suitable angelfish tankmates?

Curious if they can cohabitate with honey gourami and bumblebee gobies?

I would recommend against Gouramis with angels, they might get along, they might not. Angels are a bit finicky when it comes to tank mates. I have tried with other gouramis 3 spot (not the friendliest of the gouramis) and pearl, but eventually I either have to establish another tank for the gouramis or I have to give them away. I have kept Corys with angels with no issues.

I would go by the rule of 'niche'. Angels occupy the mid water as territorial fish. So do honey gouramis, although honeys are more surface oriented. So right there you have competition and potential conflict. They come from different parts of the world, so they may take a few weeks to realize they're competing, but that day will come. Add to that a serious size difference, and I'd expect the honey gouramis to be driven into a corner as the angels grow.

The plot twist is there are 2 fish sold as honey gouramis, and if what you have is T. labiosa (as opposed to the 'real' honey, T chuna) it may hammer the angels when they're young.

Very thick floating plants could dial the problems down, but then the honeys would vanish into them.

You didn't mention the all important question of tank size.

Brachygobius bumblebees are not great tankmates for angels. They are a group of related fish species that should be kept in a single species tank, and that generally need quite hard water, if not slightly brackish conditions. Angelfish are healthier in softer water than bumblebees need.

@Uberhoust has a suggestion I've gone with with the corydoras group - some species share natural habitat and conditions with angels, and the catfish shoal on the bottom, which keeps them from being seen as competition by the Cichlids.

I would say that angelfish are one of the harder fish to stock for especially as there is such high demand for them. I’m assuming you have at least a 40 breeder as I wouldn’t keep them in anything less. I would go with a Bristlenose pleco + corys. Some people also have had success with them with dwarf cichlids like appistogrammas and Bolivian rams. Shoaling fish are more difficult as many are fin nippers(eg. Serape tetras, Buenos Aires tetras) so you can’t get them. As well as this, don’t get any fish that’s too small as angelfish will eat them however, people have had success with some tetras.
