I noticed after buying some assassin snails that one of my angels had a white mark in its eye, this rapidly grew so I treated with sterazin, thinking eye fluke but the eye centre popped, I continued treating the fish and the eye healed leaving the fish blind in one eye and all has been well for a few weeks. I thought this would be no problem as I have had totally blind fish before and in this tank. However I went to feed the fish tonight and found this poor angel being attacked by two young Aequidens metae and the other angels, they have ripped out his blind eye completely.

He is now in my hospital tank listing very slightly to one side, the bleeding has finally stopped but there looked so much as it was bleeding.  Now he is stressing so badly he looks like he has swam through an underwater cobweb he is producing so much slime coat. There are no other wounds on the angel the other fish were just eating his eye.

I have the tank covered with a towel with a small peep space so I can monitor him, his colour is slowly getting back to normal. Apart from lots of clean water I am unsure what else to do for him. I dont know how much blood a fish can loose and recover.

Poor thing.
Add some salt to help him with stress.
Fish can produce more slime when there stressed also.

I think I am just going to have to keep an eye on him. See how he is overnight. I dont want to add any decor to the tank to help him hide just in case he catches it again. Poor lad :(

With the shock and loss of blood I think the salt will help him.
It's up to you. How awful. Was he showing signs of sickness as fish will attack a sick fish.

Eye flukes the white is usually under the iris, or lens.
White marks on top of eye can be cloudy eye, columnaris. fungus.

If he has no other wounds, then add salt. If he does not get better you may need to consider euthanasia, but remember, only if his injury gets worse! If he is just missing an eye, than there is hope. Add salt and shade the aquarium, as this will reduce stress. Hope I helped.

Initially I thought it was a scratch to the eye, but when it was not healing I checked with a magnifying glass and saw the spots/patches (lots :( ) under the lens. I did treat the whole tank but the lens burst (which I did google and can happen with eye flukes), but after treatment the eye was healing nicely until tonight.

Thankfully he is more upright now, there is only a small amount of slime stuck to his bottom fin so he has calmed down, his colour is brilliant and vibrant now, but I know keeping a lone angel in a small tank will stress him. There is no other marks at all on him, not even a torn fin. I shall keep his tank covered and monitor him. My other worry now is if he does pull through will I be able to add him back to his old tank? I know angels can be mean when they want :(

Bless Him. Glad to hear he better in himself.
Thanks for the update.
Good Luck.

He made it through the night, he is fully upright and very bright, even wagging at the front of the tank. His eye is a dreadful state. He can still move what is left of the eye but the very back of the eye is missing. He has stopped producing excess slime now and I am doing a small wc every few hours to keep the water as clean as possible. i will attempt to hand feed him later with some bloodworm as I dont want any food getting into the eye socket, this is going to be fun :(. When I do a wc he is coming to where I am pouring the water in and turning on his side so the clean water is going into his eye, I keep moving the jug because it makes me squeemish.

Bless Him.
Myxazin not a bad medication on keeping external infections at bay.

Thanks for the update star4
Good Luck.

Ok Weird. I tried Myxazin and he went nuts round the tank, It was the correct dosage but he was flashing and hitting his bad eye off the thermometer and air stone. I did a wc to remove the meds and he calmed down again. I have never seen a fish react to myxazin before :( and I cannot get him to eat. Hopefully that is still down to stress and he might eat in a day or so. They eye itself looks very clean no infection so continuing with wc and keeping the tank covered to reduce stress. I have some garlic infused brine shrimp to try him with later.

Bless Him.
I suppose it could of stung if the eye is still raw and sore. Abit like putting antiseptic on our cuts and wounds, and it stings

How is he now?

The flesh that was left inside the eye socket that was all red has started to shrivel into a small ball, behind this is white new flesh (I am hoping its new flesh). I have shone a torch into the eye and what is healing looks healthy. I think this ball will eventually shrivel and drop out just leaving the socket. He can still move what its left of the eye . He stays at the none covered end of the tank with his bad eye to the class, I am taking this that he is keeping his blind side covered in case of attack. In himself he seems ok, he will follow my fingers, but does turn to one side. His colour is still good and his fins are all erect not clamped and he is loving all the attention and extra water changes, but he still wont eat :(

Bless Him
Has he started eating yet?

Nope :( still not eating. Although come 6pm normal feed time he is frantically wagging at the front glass. He wont hand feed either. However he now has a friend in with him :(

I went to do a wc on the main angel tank yesterday and found Bob my green flier nose down in the plants, which is not unusual, he often sleeps like this. However I went to move him by hand as he hadnt moved and he just fell to the bottom of the tank on his side. I picked him up and some "gas" came out of his anus which is a little red. For Bob redness in this area is not unusual because he has a strange habbit of "fertilizing" wood, plants rock etc and getting small infections, I have gotten use to it being a Bob "thing". His breathing is laboured and after a while in a bucket getting him to finally stay upright I put him in with the angel. There was redness on his body at the end of his pectoral fins.

His breathing is still laboured but he has survived the night, he is occasionally hiccuping, which I would associate with gill flukes, but that tank has just been treated (the angel with the missing eye was the one most affected). He is semi nose down in the tank with the angel, which is making me suspect a swim bladder infection, all the redness has gone from his fins and his anus is only now a tiny red dot. However Bob is approx 14-15 years old now so it could be just his age. :(

I know its not a good idea having two fish with different problems in the same tank, but I am so stuck for space :(, but the angel has really cheered up and stays by Bobs side. I do hope the poor old fella pulls through :( and this is a reaction to the sterazin I used to treat the flukes.

Lost Bob :( angel has eaten a single brine shrimp, at least its something, but now it is searching the tank for Bob :(
