Hello,

This is my first post on here so hi all!

Unfortunately like a lot of people I guess I only came to find this place when one of my fishies is looking a little bit worse for wear. I'm hoping someone out there can identify what is wrong with my champion Angel - in the last week his left eye has started to swell white in colour, and today is even bigger, with tints of red in the swelling also. He's also stopped behaving like his usual aggressive self, and is just kind of hanging near the bubbles.

Here's a photo of his left eye, which is unchanged

and here is the problem right eye.. poor dude just want to get him well again so he can go and look after his missus and get to work on some baby angels!

Thanks for any advice you can provide,

Moses.

Either his usual aggressive self got him on the losing end of a battle, or he has a bacterial infection. It could be the first giving the second a chance to take hold. I would start with seperating him from any other possible aggressors, daily water changes, and some melafix. Some anti-bacterial meds would be a good thing to start with, Maracyn I & II is a good product, if available.

Breeding pairs do sometimes show aggression towards each other, sometimes severely, and for no obvious reason. I've had pairs that only got along while actively spawning, the rest of the time needed to be seperated. This may be the cause.

Hi Tolak,

Thanks for the advice. That sounds quite likely - he's always chasing the smaller fish around and lately they've been getting less intimidated.

I don't have a second tank, though I do have 2 x 20 litre square plastic bucket.. is there any reason I couldn't set this up as a seperate medicine tank for him? With daily water changes to you mean 100% water changes?

I need to buy a second heater anyway as winter just started here and the temp has dropped to about 25 C.. I
usually try and keep it around 28-29 C so think they may have been a little chilly in there lately.

Cheers, Moses.

The bucket will work, as long as it's tall enough. That's a small amount of water, as long as you have a cycled filter, 50% daily water changes should work. 25% daily would work with a larger tank.

You could try a divider in your main tank, a little melafix won't hurt the other fish, though antibiotics aren't a good idea for fish that aren't sick. It's probably good to have a 10 gallon on hand, & a smaller filter running on your main tank. This makes for an instant med/quar tank. The tank, heater, & filter shouldn't set you back more than $30.

BTW, welcome to TFF! :)

Hi again,

thanks for the welcome.

Fortunately the bucket is pretty tall, and he's been doing not too badly in there... I've put the semi-transparent bucker up against the tank and he sits against the common wall pining while his mate sits on in the main tank checking on him! Poor little fella.

He's looking a bit better, but still not great - this is the sixth day of treatment now so I might put him back into the main tank tonight. The medicine I got was to treat him on days 1,2,3 and 6.
