Anacharis

Hi. I have some anacharis (Elodea densa) plants that are new. I heard that if you buried them in gravel, they'll root. I did this, buried like a normal plant, and now I'm getting roots shooting out from the middle of the plants. Should I be burying them horizontally or something? Also, are these plants by nature free floaters/floating at the top? Should I or can I just float them at the top? Will this be bad for the tanks overall health?
