Would there be enough room for an oscar in a 55 gallon? It would be him and nothing else. A 55 gallon is the largest I can get. I thought they were really neat and had lots of personality.

well.......it depends on the dimensions of the tank, because most 55's have a width of 12 inches, and oscars grow up to be about 12 inches, they need plenty of free space to turn around in the tank. i dont see why not as long as there are no other fish in the tank

The bare minimum tank size for 1 oscar (As the only fish) is a VERY well filtered and maintained 55g tank, and a 70g would be the preferred size :)

55G with something like twin emperor 400's would be defined as adaquate but not ideal.

The Oscar will eventually grow too big for a 55 gallon for the simple fact that the fish ends up longer then the tank is wide!

However, the bigger the fish grows the slower it grows, and there is absolutely no reason not to house the Oscar in the 55 for a couple of years - you'll be able to tell when it begins to get tight, I would think.

like freddy said there is no reason that an oscar shouldn't be able to be housed in a 55 for awhile anyways. but like mentioned a million times already it will eventually grow too big for the 55. my prefered method to think of it is the max legnth of the fish+ 4 inches, when looking at tank size. so in this case I would say the best way to go about it would to eventually after a few years get the oscar a 75 and everything would be awesome.

this is why we need a pinned article on Oscars

good point Juan,
but remember, unfortunatly people miss the fish index and come straight here.

maybe putting a link to the index like CFC did in the catfish forum might help?

sorry for hi jacking

good point. I will have to take that into consideration i.e have a look and see how CFC worded it.... though I can pretty much guess right now!!!!

Yeah, i wouldnt get an oscar unless i had a 75 gal. But a 55 gal can house alot of other cool new world cichlids.
