My boyfriend and I were at Petco today looking for a different test kit since we were getting high ammonia readings from a Nessler kit that I found out is not compatible with amquel. Well we found out in that few minutes time what kind of people would care about fish way way way less than we do. Are you ready for this? Here it goes.

A mom and her two little sons were at Petco to get a container for 2 goldfish that her sons won at a carnival. The mom decided to get a little plastic container that is smaller than the size of a shoebox. The kids wanted her to go for a somewhat bigger plastic gold-fish container and the mom said "No, I'm not spending that much money for a bigger bowl. This little container is a perfect size for two goldfish that are going to die anyway. So we'll put two fish in here." And she was very quick and firm about it and left with that cheap little plastic thing. Immediately I couldn't help but start talking to my boyfriend about how stupid she is, how she knows absolutely nothing about fish. I'm a beginner and don't know enough about fish but compared to this woman, most people are experts. My boyfriend had to silence me, telling me that I should wait until she leaves the store to start talking about her. But I didn't care. When it comes to people this cruel and stupid I'll talk about them whether they hear me or not. Besides, what is she going to do about it?

For one thing you don't raise your children to think that fish are toys and you don't have to worry about getting the right equipment and taking proper care of them, you can just play with them and let them die. Fish may be just fish, and lower life forms than cats, dogs and humans and although we do eat certain fish, even still, they ought to be respected as delicate life forms that need a healthy proper environment to live in. Children should be taught that all pets, including aquatic life forms are a responsibility and need to be properly cared for. When my brother was a kid his gold-fish were kept in a large tank and lived for years right through his teenage years. My mother has never been rich either but at least she always had respect for life. I can't believe how horrible some people can be. We don't think the airhead mom at Petco even bothered to buy food for the fish. And my boyfriend's input was that at carnivals they have bettas now instead of goldfish so if that's what the kids won and perhaps their mom can't even tell a goldfish from a betta, then they're going to put 2 fighting fish in that little plastic, less than a shoebox size container. Cruel, cruel, cruel,

I've heard this kind of thing from people more times than I care to mention. A lot of people just don't realise how important it is to teach their children that pets are their responsibility and that their lives should be respected, probably because they were never taught that themselves as children. I'm just happy that I haven't seen chicks and bunnies given away as carnival prizes in a long time... I used to win little baby chicks all the time when the fair was in town, and being that I live on a farm, I was probably one of the only people who was actually able to raise them and care for them once they were adult chickens.

I was watching some interior design show on HGTV the other day, and they were making some kind of fish-themed room for a little girl. They winded up buying twenty goldfish, and placing them in weeny little vases all around the room, even semi-hidden behind some books on a shelf, and had a a bunch of cups glued to the wall with like 2 goldfish each. I was mortified...and unfortunately that little girl will think of goldfish as decorations instead of a creature deserving a decent home.

It's so hard to believe the things that go thru some people's head sometimes

That sounds aweful though hanako about the goldfish toture chamber, or little girls room if you like :/ ...

Very beautiful bettas synirr! Are they all yours?

I have always taught my children that all animals should be treated with respect and that pets are not "toys" but an important part of a family, and we all share in the responsibility of taking care of them. On a lighter note...last week my 9 year old asked why we have so many pets and I told him it was because my pets didn't sass back like him and his sisters...LOL
