When I first started a 10 gal tank, my ammonia levels were first Oppm's then between O.25 and O.50. Then it returned back to a light yellow to O ppm's and now it's a dark yellow, but that deep of a yellow doesn't show on my chart. I started out with one goldfish and about 5 weeks later added another. Can anyone tell me if the dark yellow ammonia color which appears in my ammonia test is safe for my fish. They seem to be doing well for now.

Is the the API master freshwater test kit? If so, dark yellow is ok for ammonia.

Whilst this wasnt your question I know, I feel it only fair to mention that goldfish require a 20g minimum tank for one fish and your tank will soon be far too small to house two goldfish in.

Thanks, yes it is API and thank you I am fully aware my goldfish are very small at present and I will deal with a bigger tank when they get bigger, I didn't ask that question but thanks for your input just the same?

The idea behind the color chart is to compare the hue of you sample to the card. The sample will appear lighter or darker depending on the lighting where you make the comparisons but the hue will not. As long as you don't have any of the greenish tint that shows up when you have low ammonia levels like 0.25 ppm, you are fine.
