I have a slight ammonia problem, i did an ammonia test last night and it was 0.5.

The situation is that i got my new tank 5 weeks ago and i transferred the water and the gravel into the new tank and what i did was i ran the old filter media alongside the new filter to clone it.

A few days ago i took the old filter media out the tank and now there is a little ammonia in there, i took the old filter media out as i thought 5 weeks would have been long enough for the new filter to establish bacteria.

What is the best thing that i can do? would it be best to do a 50% water change?

I'm sure i will get some good advice on here to sort this problem out!!!! :good:

0.5ppm isn`t that much, keep a close eye on it and as soon as it starts hitting 1ppm then do a 10-20% water change
its sounds like the bacteria didn`t colonise the other media very well and your going through a mini cycle...

Is it a juwel filter? If so then check how many sponges it has. Mine only has two blue in it as i took the black out. If youve got a black sponge then replace it with another blue to help.

If its not a juwel then what type is it? It may also mean the filter isnt big enough for all the ammonia to be eaten so you might need another filter.
But only think about that if after a while what Ian suggests doesnt work.

I've got a fluval 4+ filter, i would get another one if i really had to but i don't think it will be nessecary, hopefully the ammonia will come back down to zero within a week or two!!!

It has two white sponges, it doesn't have a carbon sponge!!

I agree to keep an eye for a couple of weeks but also keep an eye on the fish to make sure they dont get ill. Check your nitrite as much as your ammonia levels.
I have a fluval 4+ on a 55 gallon but it also has the juwel filter on it.
