Ammonia In My Tap Water...and A Lot Of It.

sorry i got confused
and it drops over night to
0.50ppm it sounds like the
only thing is ammolock
Okay I will try. Thank for the help.

you will still get an ammonia reading
when using ammolock as it turns ammonia
in to ammonium which is harmless or less harmless
to fish only use it till your filter get established
after your filter is mature it will be able to
handle the ammonia that is present in your
tap water

Is the tank rather small? You could always buy big jugs of water for now and use them til it is cycled or use them always. If it is just a Betta tank I would think perhaps maybe it is small enough that that is still a cost effective solution

Its a five gallon tank so I don't think I would be able to do that.

Have a read of this thread - someone with the same problem http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?/topic/266658-ammonia-in-tap-water/

Basically if your tank is fully cycled your media should sort out that ammonia. Just be careful not to do large water changes.

The problem is my tank is not cycled. I just got my betta and no one ever told me about the cycle until I joined the forum.

Ah. Have you tried finding some mature media to speed up the cycle? You could ask your LFS or see if there is someone on the forum who lives near you and can donate.
