set up tank with decloriniser, its a 3ft by the way, used a couple handfuls of gravel from a established tank and a filter that i had sat in other tank to help boost bacteria levels

after 24hrs placed 12 small neon tetras and 4 guppies, 2 days later (today) i come home to find the wife has placed 4 more fish in, 2 smallish catfish maybe 1.5" each and 2 other bigger fish that she doesnt even know what they are. there oval flat with stubby fins, a light blue type red tinge to them, one also has what looks like a tenticle hanging below

is there too many fish in there as a new tank?

oh and one other thing, bought a bundle of plastic plants from ebay, recieved today look cookl but buches are held together at bottom by what looks like maybe thin strips of lead. is that ok for the water?

Even when i buy plants in the package, i always rinse them off so it get rids of any dust/ odors. I do the same when i buy gravel, i always make sure to rinse them so do the same, maybe with some warmer water. As for your tank, you def' over stocked it too quickly( you live and learn) but depending on how much established gravel you put in, you may be ok. Your best bet is to do regular water changes(everyday or every 2nd day to cut down on fish waste, do about 10%) until your tank is established fully(no ammonia and no nitrite present). Make sure your able to test your water b/c you could face a spike.
Besides that, good luck with the tank :D

Yea the lead strips are fine we use them at work for the plants that we sell.

although you've taken some good precautions like adding established gravel, I think the amount of fish in the time period sounds risky. watch the water params and make sure to do regular water changes ;)

I think the bluish fish with the thingies on the bottom sound like Dwarf Gouramis :)
I love my Paradise Fish :)

heres the best pic i clould take as there camera shy

im relly paranoid now that am gonna make them suffer, bloody women they never listen.

to be fair at the present they all look extrememly happy and dont seem under any stress, the water is crystal clear

ok well i have in the tank

12 baby neon tetras
2 catfish i believe, quite small one has stripes
2 dwarf blue neon gouram
4 guppies
and a goldfish ( dont ask... lol women again)

so i better invest in a ammonia tester yes and check regularily?

the thing is she says the women in the shop told her will be fine, she told her if we want a crab have to wait 6 wk for build up of waste food etc to collect at the bottom.

That sounds like good advice. Do you have any idea at all what the catfish are (maybe on til receipt)? Like by their shape? Are they both the same shape?

The only reason I ask is because I know of a striped catfish (striped talking/raphael) that I was told I could not keep with cardinals as it would eat them in their sleep!! I am not saying this is what is goin to happen but just in case.

I am gald your fish seem ok. Whenever I add a lot of fish in (we all get carried away sometimes!!) I just do small frequent water changes for a little while after wards just to let the filter keep up.

HTH

i dont no sorry, ones more plain and the other has a couple black like patches on it, they seem to spend most of there life bottom of tank occasionally coming out to play.

my wife had the sence to tell the lfs what fish we already had so hopefully they have advised her well.

next we have decided to purchase a fish each and one for little girl, so thats 3 more fish that will be added in a few weeks time.

not sure what to get though

any sugestions?

oh we plan to get a apple snail and crab also
