I was mindlessly chatting to a friend about buying some Seachem products the other day, and he seems to think that you can use terrestrial plant ferts as a suitable alternative?
Is this true?
If it is, is there a safe list of products which can be bought in the UK, from a regular DIY shop i.e B&Q or homebase?

I mix my own for a high tech tank. Dry ferts are available from various people on line and can be easily mixed with some pure water to make mixes that you just add daily in small amounts. I mixed mine to just add 1 ml per 10 gallons of each mix to my high tech tank. It worked fine but I ended up going low tech because I just got tired of constant plant care.

Yes and no. Most terra ferts use ammonia as the nitrogen source, so if you have livestock it's pretty much a no if you don't know what you're doing.
As Oldman said, you can mix your own using certain 'safe' chemicals tho to save cash.
Check out the DIY ferts link in my sig.
