Algae?

Hi all,
I just got home from overseas after a month. Cleaned out hte tank of algae that was all over the glass because cousin was taking care of hte tank (not a fish person....)

Anyway, One type of my plants have this wierd algae looking thing on it, i think its algae but im not sure...
Here is a picture:

Is that algae?

Also, whats the best way of removing spot algae from plants?
Have tried to rub iwth my finger but no luck Makes the plants look ugly

On a positive note, Plants have grown alot And bannana lily has risen to the surface With 5 stems and leaves Will post pics in the Planted Tank Journal section later on tonight. Having issues with the internet at the moment.

Can you get eSHa products in Australia? If so, their protolon anti-algae is very good. Clears ALL types and feeds plants too. Also safe with fish.

They look more like roots to me... My plants sometimes do it. I think it's normally due to not getting enough nutrients.

And I'm not sure about removing GSA from plant leaves. I know you can bleach dip plants (can't remember concentrations though. Sorry!)
I'm not sure if it works on GSA.

The only definite way I know of to remove GSA is to just remove the affected leaves.

Hmm well it wasnt dosed while i was overseas so thatd explain the nutrient problem and the roots. So ill leave those and continue my dosing.

Hmm, well like more than half are effected Dont want to pull off half the leaves lol. Will just be big stems haha

Thanks. Does anyone know of this wierd looking brown stringy type thing (kind of looks like the roots on this picture) that is growing on my java fern? Trying to upload a picture now

The brown fuzzy things hanging *downwards* from the middle of leaves are the roots of baby ferns. I'm not completely clear on what happens, but what seems to happen is the sex cells under the leaves get fertilised (they're in the little dark spots) and baby ferns grow, and as they grow, they produce roots. Eventually they break off, and you get a new plant.

Hair algae is either a short fringe or else long threads, often rather blue-black in colour, and tends to grow on the edges of leaves rather than the middles. In any case, algae is rarely a real problem, and if you up the lighting so you can have some fast-growing plants, and then introduce some nerite snails and cherry shrimps, you should find your algae problems go away.

Thanks mate. Only algae problem i have then is Green Spot Algae. Not to sure how to treat it though :\

Have rading uping the dose of phosphate may help?

Any ideas?
