I have brown algae, very thin film and needs some elbow grease to shift from glass, but also it gets onto broad leaf plants as in the picture below (click for bigger) I'm failry sure its not diatoms, as I understand they are more of a soft brown deposit and my tank is well established (though I could be wrong!). Could anyone ID it please and suggest a method to eradicate it? Many Thanks.

link in my sig if that helps. Brown algae usually forms in new tanks, how long has yours been set-up? It can also to do with a short photoperiod.

Nope its an established tank, 5-2-5 photoperiod but low WPG (around or just under 1 WPG if I remember correctly).

Check out theplantedtank.co.uk for an excellent algae guide.

BYW the siesta break midday does nothing to prevent algae, you'd be better having the lights on for 10hrs straight, the plants would probably prefer it too.
