I agree whole heartedly with your statement there Andy. Your extra 6 years in todays terms definately means you're old enough to be my Dad. lol

What CO2 gassing Garuf? You not followed my lead have you?

Andy

Gareth - did you get the reg checked at the fire place in the end?

Thats cool about the fry :) you're right, its crazy what somethings will cope with, especially when you think how fragile eggs look.

I didn't, college outright refused in case it killed someone.
The fry are amazing, so tiny.
I will admit it's a mixed blessing though since it mean's for the next 4 weeks the largest water change I can carry out without killing them is about 10% and I can't run a black out either. Which I'm sure you can understand is a PITA since I'm entirely algae ridden and my brother meddling cleaning the front glass has un-planted all my hc by disturbing the substrate...
So yeah, mixed blessing, I hope to sell them on and get some microrasbora in 2-3 months when they're large enough to be saleable in the meantime I have the new filter coming as well as a new diffuser so fingers crossed I'll be able to get things under control.

I wish I could take the wood out and give it a good scrub but I'm afraid of killing the fry and I'll be unable to water change and black out so for the next few weeks it's going to be a tense wait till I can take some real steps towards ridding the algae. Next week or the week after if money allows I plan on getting 21 cherry shrimp to help and some nitrite snails the week after. fingers crossed for the time being.

Guess thats understandable for the college.

Sounds like once the fry are sorted, its a complete tank strip down and rescape, I always enjoy a good rescape, completely change the look of the tank :) Doesn't make up for the fish loss though, Ive had some of my fish for years, I'd hate to lose them.

Keep you're chin up :) and keep us posted on progress.

Sam

I've lost 50% of the fry, not sure why maybe weakness maybe because I swapped to the 2224 or who knows what.
I wasn't really planning on a total resapce, mainly since I don't want to give up on this one before seeing it come full term.
I'm home alone over christmas so It's the perfect time to do a massive strip down, provided I can bring myself to do it.
The plants will still be far from healthy though and all that will happen is that I'll get algae again right?

I got myself a set of the nano cal aqua lily pipes, £35. Bargain. I've got my eye on one of those lovely hydor external heaters so I'm gonna treat myself to one of those too.

But yeah, Algae and how much I totally suck at planted tanks!
Would a total strip down work or would I just be postponing another algae outbreak?

Who's to say, although I used to have masses of BBA in my main tank and following a massive strip down its not really returned, although I do dose excel the moment I see it so that helps. Only trouble is I get awful green water in the tank now, so have to run the UV for a few days every couple of weeks, nothing seems to be shifting that dam stiff. So you could get rid of the algae you have and just end up with another type! I do find a re-scape injects a new lot of enthusiasm into me for my planted tanks though, and that's never a bad thing.

Where did you get the mini inlets from?

Sam

Direct from cal-aqua. talk to them they're nice guys, the set I got is there new "nano" set so I'll write a review once they arrive.

I agree about the rescape, it does provide fresh enthusiasm, I wish I could find some nice big rocks to compliment the wood I have that I don't have to spend money on.
Should be easy considering I live in a wood with a quarry but if you think this you'd be deeply mistaken lol.

Not seen their website before, dam sight cheaper than getting it from AE! I love their in-line co2 diffusers, very elegant.

Sam

Exactly half price ;)
I want an inline, can't justify the cost for a 10gallon though.

Here's the proposed christmas rescape if I can get plants/decide it's worth while.

what do you think?
please help me choose plants, Im thinking anubias crypts maybe bolbitis and needle leaved fern but open to suggestions.

The plan looks pretty good as it is to be honest, Gareth. I'm not very good at scape myself (yet ;)) so cant really comment. I find it easier to make suggestion to existing scapes, I'm not much of a visionary. The only thing I would say is that the bolbitis might get a bit big, but dont quote me on that :)

UKAPS is probably your best bet for decent scaping advice.

Sam

Wicked cool, I've posted up on ukaps, now we play the waiting game.

Realised I still have this thread at a lose end, so here goes.
I still have algae. Clado as a matter of fact, excel hasn't killed it nor has a black out so i'm doing manual removal each day and keeping co2 high, Fert's I fear are out so I need help getting them back in check.
research into clado so far has yielded no success, but I try my best to keep on top of what I have. already, this means removing as much as I can see each day, so far I don't see any decrease but we'll see.
I'd like to know how Tom Barr recommends ridding clado, all the other advice seems to have done little to knock it back.
