Albino Cory Cat

God damnit. Came back from football, hes dead.

And then i havent been able to see my second otto for hours so i searched for him, i cant find him anywhere, and whilst searchin i see a dead panda sticking out of the sand.

This is really annoying me, i love my corys and this has all been happening in the last month or so and when i was on holiday. Heres my death list in the past month:

Maybe its my fault, iv been getting my fish from Pets at Home recently, maybe they have something in there tanks, i dont know. Because for 4-5 months before this i was having no problem what so ever, and then this has all happened. My water stats have been perfect since i cycled the tank, and iv done at least 2 thorough water changes per week.

I seriously dont know what else i can do, its only been this last week that iv been treating with Pimafix, and from today Anti Internal Bacteria treatment. My lone albino cory cat is going strong, although iv just noticed the back end of his body is going redish kinda like the other albino i just lost, or maybe im being paranoid.

My lone ram is going strong, he looks a-okay, as does my Clown Pleco and 5 neon tetras which iv had for over 5 months now. My otto looks in perfect health and lively which iv had for about 2 months now, as do my cherry barbs which iv had for a week. My remaining 3 peppered cory cats seem okay, theyre just lazy.

???? ???? ????

Im trying to find out the cause. The last fish i bought before all this kicked off, was an otto, 2 albino cory cats and 1 peppered cory cat from Pets at Home. Then a week later before my holiday, i lost a peppered cory and a bolivian ram. I came back off holiday and the same week 2 of my panda corys died, so couple of days later i went to P@H again and bought 2 baby panda corys to keep him company, the following day the bigger panda died. Two weeks later (this week), i find a problem with my albino cory cat and hes died tonight, and found a panda cory which looks like it died yesterday. Hmm.

PS. I took the lid off the tub and the Albino Cory still has signs of life, he came up for air but hes worse for wear, hes lying on his side and looks very red at the back :(

Sorry bless him.
R.I.P.

If he's on his back he won't be able to eat, its probably best to euthanise him at this stage.
I would advise treating your main tank as a precautionary measure as internal bacterial infections can be quite infectious, if you can catch these things and nip them in the bud then this is the best, the internal bacterial interpet med is not a very stressful med for fish and doesn't harm filter bacteria so it will be fine to treat the main tank as a whole.

When you do water changes, do you match the temp of the new water closely to that of the temp of the water in the tank? Quick fluctuations in tank temp can sometimes lead to septicemia infections in fish.

I treated the tank yesterday also when i bought Interpet Anti-Bacterial.

He definately died during the night, poor little fella.

Yes when i do water changes i match it closely to the temp of the water in the tank. I used to use a thermometer to match it perfectly, but i smashed it, now im using judgement. Before adding to the tank i pour some on my hand and decide that way, but once added to the tank the temperature doesnt change significantly on the thermometer.

Will it be okay to treat with Pimafix as well as Interpet? Or is it one or the other.

Its absolutely fine to use the two meds together at the same time, i've done it in the past and had no problems using the two meds together :good: .

Right, thanks.

I may complete revamp my tank - as in convert from sand to gravel. I know corys prefer sand, but sand is way harder to clean and looks messier. I may create a sand section somehow.

Thinking of going out and getting some gravel and seperating all my fish in either the bucket or tub whilst i get the sand out and put gravel in.

Thank you for your help :)

I'm glad to help :good:

Hmm personally i found sand easier to keep clean than gravel, it would be best to convert the whole tank to sand if you are going to do it, as otherwise if you just have a sand section in the tank the sand will inevitably end up getting mixed up with the gravel over time.

I have Argos play sand in atm, and its very hard for me to keep it clean. It takes me forever to do a water change, not to mention that its so fine that some of it comes up when i syphon all the crap off the bottom. Then once iv cleaned it, i havent got all the crap out, just the majority of it because i cant get all the finer bits without sucking a whole bunch of sand up. Then hours later it will look messy again because of the pleco.

Im thinking of white gravel and getting a UV bulb for my tank. Going to browse the members pictures section to see if something catches my eye.

I have fine white silica sand in all of my tanks, its a very fine sand and so dirt doesn't get trapped inbetween the grains (it just sits ontop of the sand), all i need to do to clean it is waft a fine fabric fish net above the sand and the dirt just gets lifted into the net and the sand stays on the bottom  .
