Is there a way to convert this into a spondge filter for a 1.5ltr fry tank?

What exactly do you have an air pump with air stone and air line?

yes it has a tube and stone that pushes air into the water to make surface movements.

Easily converted then get an old food pot or something similar, make some holes in the bottom quite small, place the airstone in the bottom then stuff with sponge or filter floss close it up and make a couple of holes in the top for air to escape and then cycle normally.

how would this work tho, since it blows air out and it's not doing any intake like a normal filter would..

take water in then filter it through and pour it back out.

The air bubble displaces water then as it rises there is a pressure difference so water is pulled into the "wake" of the bubble as it rises this causes an upwards flow of water following each bubble add these all together and you have sufficient flow for a filter.
