Noticed someone selling a rena air 300 cheap locally and just wondered whether it's something I should consider for my new larger tank. What exactly do they do?

Good question. I've just created a thread asking if I need an air pump, and literally created the thread just a few mins after you! Lol

you could use an air pump to attach a air line with a airsnone at the end of it looks really nice in the tank and puts oxygen in the tank.

I agree they can look pretty, but I'm hoping to create a very natural look to my new tank. So unless I really need one, or it has big advantages to the health of the fish/plants, I'll probably give it a miss.

Plants will oxygenate your water alone if they are live, also depending how your filter works if the water surface gets disturbed (has rippples) this allows gaseous exdhahknge thus the oxygen enterijg the water, so air pumps are not always necessary

you dont need one, i dont use one because they are bloody noisey :| the only thing i use one for is to power my sponge filter in a fry tank. they can be used for DIY CO2 and brine shrimp hatcheries etc.

some big blue hagen elite thing, it has a dial built in to change the flow of air which makes it a lot more quiet on a low setting. still noisey though. :/

i would probably put one in the main tank if i had a silent one :|

I'm hoping to get a ehiem pro thermo 2324 and have lots of live plants. Literally hoping to create a biotope in a 180 litre juwel vision.

might get one for the fry tank then, wont help much with the sound of the bubbles errupting on the surface though :D

your gonna be looking at a CO2 canister system then i assume?

I can see me going that way, but I don't understand the technology behind it yet. Low tech to start with, then possibly.

yeah its a lot to take in at once, *boggle* im thinking of a canister system but cant afford it at the moment :(
