Hi
I am just setting up my first tank. I have just started fishless cycling thanks to lots of help from this forum.

It's 120cm x 41 cm x 45 cm.

I got it on ebay and need a new air pump. I am a bit confused as to which make and size etc.
I want the usual things, efficiency and most of all quietness!
Can anyone help?

Thanks
Fiona

Well there are plenty to choose from I got a tetra tec aps 300 works fine it has 2 outputs , its nice and quiet and does the job :good:

But as I said there are loads of manufactures out there all with a couple of models.

Just remember put a check valve (also known as a one way valve) (set in the correct direction of course) in the line its a safe guard against water returning to the pump if the power goes out or the pump fails.

I would also recommend a regulator valve to adjust the flow of air to your needs :good:

Both valves are easily found and inexpensive.

Hope this helps

Regards onebto.

Most filters don't need an airpump / have one built in, and so you won't need an air pump. As long as the filter output creates 'ripples' on the surface of the water this will increase the surface area needed to airate the tank :)

I have a fluval 4 plus internal filter. Will I need an air pump too?

Thanks

The 4+ does not require an air pump. If you want bubbles, use the tubing and special nozzle extension to bring in atmospheric air for the bubbles. If you don't want to see bubbles, the 4+ moves plenty of water to ensure the tank water is adequately oxygenated.

most people have an air pump for look, and its actually a myth about needing to put air in the water (think about it, the air goes stright to the top and pops!), what keeps water oxygenated is movement in the water surface, so i keep my filter nearer the surface

Thanks everyone. It makes sense now. I wont be buying a new air pump.
