i bought two assasin snails yesterday as i have the same problem as you! if you have a big infestation buy a few more but the assasin snails will take care of the problem :)

you can get lotion from most garden centres to get rid of snails.

really worth getting a bottle.

Please explain why it is a good aide to poison snails and let them rot in your tank

Lots of water changes and less light will cut algae growth.failing that Clown loach :)

Never ever poison snails unless you can pick them out of your tank. Malaysian TS are like an iceberg. If you can see 10 you prob have 1000s most about 1mm long

^^ This is so very true. The baby snails can get sucked into filters, and reseed the tank, they bury and live under substrate, both sand and gravel. So poison is a very bad idea!

so what am i to do? water changes everyday and get a big snail? no affence but iv never seen any snails on sale round here and i think they look ugly, is there any other fish i could have?

thanks x

if i did a complete clearout of the tank, get rid of the snails then start again, would that be quicker and easier? i have a spare tank i can fill and add a heater to that will be ok for about 2 hours with the fish in, but would i have to go through and cycle the whole tank again?

grrr i hate when things like this happen :/

Right...ignore ALL the advice you've currently been given.

Assasin snails...are a fair idea, but then you need to sustain a snail population for them to feed on otherwise they will die once they've eaten them all.

The best and most tested way is by getting something such as blanched lettuce or courgette, and weighting it down in the tank either on a small saucer or something else. Overnight alot of the snails should come along and have a munch, when you turn the light on in the morning you remove the mass of snails that has gathered. I'd personally chuck them outside or something, it's not very nice as it'll be a slow death for them. But there we go...

Repeat the process each night and you will eventually have removed all the snails.

You can also manually remove them from the tank.

Liquid snail killer is a bad idea as you don't know what other organisms it will affect. And with the above method you actually remove them from the tank as opposed to leaving them to rot.

A clown loach in the 48ltr would be a death sentence to the poor thing! That is an unbelievably terrible idea.

Cutting the amount of light will only allow you to maintain the population of pest snails...by the sounds of it you just want rid. So following the above method will give you that.

If cucumber doesn't work particularly well then try various other leafy veggies till you get one they're really attracted to! :)

ok thanks, just walked in and all my fish are eating it instead of the snails! haha lol well the snails might come along too lol x

I wouldnt worry about it. Once you have snails in your tank you will never be fully rid of them, and they are not bad if you keep them under control. If you dont overfeed your fish then the snail populations should stay small. If you can get some assasin snails (try online if your local FS doesnt sell them) they wont starve if you ever run out of snails which is highly unlikely - they will also eat flake food etc.

You have a free source of nutritious fish food! - I just pick mine out when small crush them and drop them back in - the fish fight over them!
