Hey guys,

I was watching the fish the other day and i noticed that the large bala's were a tad aggressive towards each other. I have attached a video to show you what i mean, Water stats are fine, Amm 0 Nitri 0 Nitra 0. Water temp is 28 degrees C. Tank is a 5x2x2. There are no signs of diseases or anything, just a couple of scratches on the scales from being spooked. Tank mates include 6 clown loaches and a few tetra's.

From what i can tell, its 1 male and 1 female bala. Any idea's as to what could be causing this behavior?

The one thats doing most of the agressive behaviour looks slightly plumper than the other. So it seems that the bahaviour is preventing the other from eating properly. General fishy bullying.

The circling bahaviour, and side bashing is behaviour I have seen before with egg scatterers (e.g. tetra). They circle each other while chasing - and then the male bashes his females side to make her release eggs, so maybe you could research the breeding behaviour of these fish just to check whether they are fighting, or "getting it on".

Hopefully someone here can help you sex the fish - I think you may have 2 males. They seem to be trying to show each other "who's boss" rather than flirting.

...who can tell boys from girls then??

from what i have read, the females are plumper and the males are slender. which is what leads me to believe that one is male and the other female.

Thanks for your input saz, i was thinking that they might be breeding myself

Cheers, Trent
