ok, i really want to get some african chilids, but can i put them in with serpae tetras?

What size tank? As VantagE said, Kribs yes. I have serpaes in with my kribs and it's a great tank :)

some shellies. from lake tanganyika. especially in such a high tank, it would be a good dither.

Your best bet with serpaes are dwarf species from the rivers of africa or the new world - rams, kribs, apistogramma... However shelldwellers from lake Tanganyika will work well too, or a pair of small rockdwellers like Neoplamp Leleupi. There is only one cichlid from lake Malawi suitable to a 29 gallon tank, a shelldweller not commonly found.
