was just wondering, can you keep african butterfly fish in brackish water? iwant a brackish tank but i also want a african butterfly. wondering if anyone has experience in this.

Dont think ive ever seen them listed as brackish, there from the Congo river basin which i dont believe is anywhere close to brackish. They are a delicate species and hard to find good specimens, usually they are mis fed in shops etc.

No, brackish water and Pantodon buchholzi do not mix long term as far as I know.

They are quite adaptable in terms of water hardness, I have one that shares a tank with 4 Ctenopoma acutirostre/occelatum; 1 Xenomystus nigri; 1 (half adult size) Chrysichthys ornatus... Pretty shortly they will going into my 6-foot tank after a bit of fish juggling (they would be fine in my Rio240 if it was free, albeit the catfish would still need the 6-footer long term). These are in gH 13 water, so moderately hard.
