~ I learn something new ~ ~~~~ every day ~~~~
My boyfriend and I went on a 2 week camping holiday in Botswana and Namibia in January this year. I've never camped in my life !. But it's a trip I desperately wanted to do and it's horrifically expensive as it is, so camping was really the only way. We joined an "organised" tour, but there were only 5 of us (guests) plus the driver/guide and the cook/helper.
The first few days it was a real mission to learn how to assemble our own tents (almost every day!) but towards the end is was easy peasy and absolutely wonderful. It's the most awesome experience to lie there at night (on your little 5" foam mattress) in the searing heat (even at night) and hear the nightlife all around you, the bright moon in the African sky and stars to bright and many it's dazzling.
Absolutely frightening at times (once had hippos walking right past our tent in the middle of the night and I actually thought I was going to die of fright or at best trampled to death) but it is unforgettable and out of this world.
January is a very bad month to go. It is incredibly hot. It can be very dry but also very green which makes it very hard to see animals (which we tried to do a lot of in the Botswana Okavango Delta and Etosha National Park in Namibia). But we were very lucky and ended up taking hundreds and hundreds (if not thousands) of photos.
It's been very hard for me to choose which to share with you, but I'll try and break it down in a few posts. There are just too many to give them all in one go
Some of these were taken from the window of the car as we were driving by - so I'm very surprised they came out as well as they have. Unfortunately when I reduced them for photobucket, a lot of the quality was lost. The files were over 8MB each and they're down to around 800kb or less now).
