Aeration System As Filter

I have a 1ltr jar houseing 2 platy fry that are less than 1 inch in size. I placed a spondge from a 10gal filter and a tube going into an aeration pump. Is this good as a filter?? it seems to be creating tons of movement maybe too much (it's a 60hz 3.9watt pump). Please advise is needed or i may have to flush the fry :$

NEVER EVER FLUSH A FISH!!!

that is the worst thing you can do in environmental terms
if the fish carry a disease then it will polute the water table...if the fish survives sewage treatment and gets into the ecosystem it may hybridise with other species and create another problem

if your worried...place a small ammount of zeolite into the tank and replace daily until you can find a suitable home...or buy a breeding net and leave it in yur tank with the fry...if the spinge you are using has no bacteria then it wont work...if it does it may work depending on how you constructed it

i resued an already matured spondge. i cut a hole and placed the tube into it. it is blowing air into the spondge which is also causing surface movements.

yeah that should work as long as there is a siphon going on in the tube

yeah but the air is being replaced by water at the bottom...when that water moves...water from outside the sponge drains through the spong and replaces it...this is how it should work

ahh i see, so it is moving water from botton and when it hits the top that is where it goes through the filter and back out. i wish my lfs would take them 2 fry really, cus i dont got anywhere to put him at all. i got rid of my freshwater tank and sticking with marine atm.

You need a small canister I generally use a film a canister some use old food containers you punch several holes in the bottom with a nail, then put the air pump outlet into the base preferably in the centre you can fix it on with super glue. Then pack the filter sponge into the canister you don't want it to tightly packed or it will restrict flow, punch some holes in the top of the canister and you have built an air filter. Each bubble causes a pressure difference and as it rises the water is drawn into the space left by the bubble this causes and upward flow of water.

the problem is the container they are in now is small 1ltr so i can't fit alot in there. perhaps a small tomatoe tin jar?

if you don't have a freshwater tank, why are you keeping fry in a jar?
they'll eventually need a tank

where did they come from anyhow?
