This may seem like a stupid question but how do I aerate? Having read that I need to while I'm cycling cause the temp is quite high, I dutifully ordered an airstone before it ocurred to me that the filter doesn't pump.

When I kept tropical fish as a kid, of course the little pump that hummed away blew air through an airstone and ran the 'undergravel filter.

Mmmm. Stupid question or not?

Yep, you need a little pump and a length of air hose.

If you don't intend to use it after cycling just get the cheapest one you can find on eBay.

Thanks.

My JBL CristalProfi 100 came with a little airstone type thingie so that assed to my confusion. I assume that's just for diffusing water returning to the water column.

It might be for aeration puposes, like a venturi. I had a look at the diagram and there's a T piece that fits to the pump outlet with a length of air hose on it a and a black thing at the end. I think that's for hanging out of the tank to bring air in, you then get an aerated flow.

Genius! Thanks for taking the time to investigate that for me.

As long as you are getting decent circulation from your filter, the water in your tank will quickly reach equilibrium saturation values for oxygen based on the gas exchange at the surface. It will be very difficult to raise the dissolved oxygen much beyond that value. I would not worry about it.
