Hi guys,

My first post on here ( just joined) i bought a roma 90 fluval tank on wednesday everything seems to be perfect got the heater set at 25 hope this is ok...........anyway just wondered when it is safe to add fish?? i was thinking on saturday that will give the tank 10 days to do it's thing the other question is what fish do you people think i should go for as my first purchase???

Many thanks.

Steven

You need to cycle your tank before you even think about adding fish. You can either do a "fish in" cycle or a "fishless" cycle but most people will tell you to do a "fishless" cycle as cycling a tank with fish can harm them. I'm no expert but wait until people like Miss Wriggle come as they will tell you more.

In the meantime DON'T add any fish.

Yes Ally is correct -- it turns out that the store is only selling you the "hardware" for a filter and really its not ready for fish for some time, anywhere from 3 weeks to 2 months. The thing that makes it possible to keep fish in spaces much smaller than nature is a clever tool called the "biofilter."

There are two particular species of bacteria that we grow on the surfaces of the right type of filter media that will carry out the "Nitrogen Cycle," one of the basic environmental cycles of nature. Stores have tried hard to satisfy out need for instant gratification, telling us to not worry, just get fish, or selling "bacteria in a bottle." But one of the reasons this forum exists is because this has left a lot of unsuccessful, disappointed beginners out there wondering why their fish died or were sick right off. They figured out that there is a better way and its documented here in the articles about the nitrogen cycle and about fishless cycling.

Most discover this forum -after- finding these problems. You are probably among the few to discover it before having fish, thus having the possibility of getting it right the first time! Good luck and good reading! There are a lot of great members here who will enjoy helping with your questions.
