I have a 47g (3 ft long) which houses a Yellow black back cichlid (Labidochromis Caeruleus) who is a vicious little Beep and was wondering what other African cichlids would co habitate with him. I know that it is never peaceful but a balance of powers so who can be the USSR in this cold war.

Many thanks

Regards

if the fish is yellow and black then it could be an auratus and not a caeruleus. Caeruleus are pretty peaceful but auratus are real nasty.
If it is an electric yellow (caeruleus) then peacocks (Aulonocara sp) should be fine with it. If it is an auratus then maybe something like a lombardi but they will fight in that size tank.

Thanks Colin. It is Labidochromis Caeruleus (Electric yellow) and this one is a vicious beep. I was hoping that would be a suitable compatiblity; Auloncara Spp it is then.

Regards

wow an agro caeruleus :) they are normally pretty peaceful for a rift lake cichlid. If it gets real agro and hammers the Peacocks (Aulonocaras) then try L. fueliborni or some mbuna like zebras.

Rearrange the tank before you add any new fish. This will help to break up the caeruleus' territory and give the new comers a better chance. Also try to introduce a few new fish at the same time. Then the aggression can be spread out over all the new fish rather than just one.

Be aware that labs and zebra's have been known to hybridize. Not a big deal if you know you aren't selling fry.

You could also try:
Cynotilapia Afra
Astatotilapia latifasciata
Pseudotropheus demasoni

with about 15 fish total.
