Hi Everyone,

My son had a betta for 1.5 years in a five-gallon heated, filtered tank and it died a couple weeks ago. He was very upset and cried.

He requested that we replace the betta with three ADFs, which I agreed to. The tank is heated and filtered (with foam covering intake/outake to avoid any risk of being sucked up.

I had fed them the frog food the guy at the pet store recommended and the frogs refused to eat it (I put it on a tray in the tank). Within one day, two of the frogs died. I decided to give the third frog flake food till I could return him to the pet store and he's eating it! (Yeah, I know this isn't the right kind of food for him - but for a day or two, I thought he'd be fine and he IS fine.)

My preference would be to trade the frog for another betta b/c we've had them for years and had great luck, but my son says no. He's named the frog "lucky" and seems attached to it.

I am wondering if two guppies or two platy fish would be a compatible match for the frog to help provide more action in the tank.

neither guppies nor platties are suitable for a 5 gallon tank, they are active fish and need at least 2 times that gallon size.

Your best bet is to make sure you can get this frog healthy -
what is the pelleted diet you are feeding him? fish flakes should not be fed to the frog.

Also, considering the frog is new to your tank, they often take some time to adjust and during this time rarely feed.

I recommend HBH frog and tadpole bites if you are in the USA, or Zoomed frog bites if you are in the UK. Using a tray is ideal to help them find their food. Treat 1-2 times a week with frozen bloodworms (defrost prior to feeding. You can cut the frozen cube into pieces and just defrost the amount you need - for one frog you can get by with a small amount). They also love frozen brineshrimp, again cut the amount you need off the cube and defrost that amount. Do not refreeze any frozen foods after they have thawed due to bacteria.

Is your tank still cycled or did you thoroughly clean out the filter after the betta died? ADF are extremely sensitive to water conditions and unfortunately ones at LFS are usually in very poor health and the stress of moving to a new tank and shock of new water can often do them in.
