I have a couple of barbs and goldfish in a 55 gallon tank and i'm thinking about adding some Oscars. Would this be a good idea? The goldfish and barbs seem like they would be big enough to avoid getting eaten by the Oscar because they about 4-5" big and the barbs are around 2-3". What does anyone else think?

In my opinion a 55 is too small for an oscar, i had one in a 65 and i thought it was small for him.

I would not do it, for the well being of the oscar.

If you insist on doing it then the oscar should be the ONLY fish in the tank, with little decor. As a 55 is considered a bare minimum for the fish.

Sorry

I think you should rehome the goldfish frankly. They're not tropical fish and do not belong with barbs. Also, some people manage to house Oscars in 55 gallon tanks, but they never reach their full potential. I recommend you don't try and squeeze an oscar into that tank.

ph= 6.0-6.5

temperature= 75-78

decorations= NO PLANTS.....Rocks or driftwood

Tank= 60 gallons per fish

Hey no one said keeping oscars was easy at first although they are awesome fish.... I have two oscars right now and let me say they are so awesome!

STAY AWAY FROM FEEDER FISH!!!!!

Well, your current set up is flawed. Barbs are tropical fish requiring a temp in the 70's. Goldfish are coldwater fish requiring temp in the 60's. I don't know what temp you are keeping this 55 at but its got to be bad for the fish that aren't getting their natural temp range. Another thing to consider is that barbs are fin nippers and goldfish are slow moving. Most likely your goldies are getting picked on by the barbs.

Now, oscar get to be in the range of 10''-18'' and are agressive. It is true they aren't "as" aggressive as other cichlid but they will no doubt get all your current fish. Some people will argue against keeping 1 oscar in a 55 but I'm not one of those people. If you want to get an oscar you will have to get a different tank for the goldfish and barbs. Even then you will only be about to keep 1 full grown adult oscar in the 55g. That's assuming that your oscar doesn't happen to be on the ranger end of the spectrum and grow to be 18'', in which case you will need a bigger tank or rehome him. A 55gal's width in less than 18'', I believe, and the fish wouldn't be able to turn around. The reason why they need atleast a 55 per oscar is because of the amount of waste they produce. Good luck.

The reason why the barbs are in there is because someone I know was getting rid of his fish and I decided to throw themin with my Goldfish. It was pretty much either they came home and went in with the goldfish or he was going to toss them out in the trash can. So their going to have to cope because I have nowhere else for them. Maybe i'll skip on the Oscar though.

Definitely skip the oscar.. Goldfish are poo machines and are probably stinkin up the tank already.. adding an oscar would just turn the tank into a toilet.... as other people said it's not great keeping cold and warm water fish together but if you have to you have to...

Just don't keep the temperature too high... I'm sure both goldfish and barbs can live in water that's about 72' and still be happy and healthy
