Adding Fish To A Cycled Tank

The way I add fish, and always have, and my father always has is to float the bag in the tank for ten mins to let the water temperature even out.

Add some tank water to the bag and then leave for 30mins or so, and then gently pour the whole lot in to the tank.

I think we do it that way as the fish have time to get used to the tank water. :good:

One shop owner told me not to pour their water into the tank, but I did anyway, it's the way I've always done it.

Float the bag for 25 mins, add a cup of water from tank water from tank to the bag and then repeat every 10 mins for the next hour, this way the fish will acclimitise with the tank water.
This is the way most people do it.

Thats got to be the most tedious way of doing it, if you need a slower acclimatisation for more sensitive fish just look up the drip method :) allows you to slowly add tank water to the bag over a period of several hours without having to go back to it every 10 mins and fanny about with cups of water :)

But if these fish are so sensitive to conditions surely being in a bag for over an hour with no filtration is also bad?

Yes and no. Not all fish are the same and some will stress more easily. IMO it's not wise to take a fish from one set of tank conditions and put them into your own before acclimatising them thoroughly. I use a bucket and just add a cupful of tank water every 5/10 minutes, but take a good hour/hour and a half to do it. Never had any losses with new additions since I started doing it that way.

With the drip method there not "in the bag for hours without filtration", theres a constant flow of filterd water entering the bag which keeps it clean and airated :)

Rosy barbs arnt sensitive, just float it for 15 etc and away you go, if they die you can blame me no prob :)

Peace.

I have 6 rosys in place now, did what you said SJ2K, floated the bag with a bit of tank water in then gently poured them in later. They seem happy so far lol.
