Adding A Discus...

Hi peeps, advice please...

My neighbour wants to get rid of his Discus fish due to him moving - I would ask for the tank too but its quite a shambolick setup to be honest so re-homing this discus would be in its favour (and besides, I dont have the room either!)

My tank setup (200 Litre) has 10 x Glowlight Tetra, 6 x Cardinal Tetra, 3 x Guppy, 5 x Harlequin Rasbora, 1 x Cory and 1 x African Dwarf Frog.

Now my last experience of having a Discus in a previous setup didn't prove too good - he turned into such a bully despite everyone informing me they are quite peaceful.

Would a Discus be compatable with my other fish?

You're more likely to get a better response if you move this to New World Cichlids. Discus are a cichlid, and one of (if not the) fussiest and most sensitive fish commonly available in the hobby. Worth getting some specialist advice.

Can't have just one. The tank is big enough (just) for a minimum group of 5, but you'd have to shed a lot of your current stock to fit them in

The corry (assuming it is a more common species) and ADF will melt in the heat of a Discus tank, so they would have to go if you do get Discus. The Glowlights are potential fish-food to an adult Discus, so I'd remove them for their own safety also. Aside from that, the current stocking will work with these fish

Discus need a warmer than average (28-32 centigrade) tank, that is mature and well maintained with regular large waterchanges and a group to remain happy in the long-run. They also require a group to spread aggression and avoid them going down with stress related problems
