hi and thanks for reading!
as some will no from prev post i am upgrading my 30 ltr tank to 96 ltr.
my 30 has been going fine for around 9 months now and have 'borrowed' one of the filters to 'seed my new tank. has bout 12 guppy in there and catfish (small usd catfish and brisltnose-almost an inch big)
had been running 2 and have got the standad terta tec one that came with the tank (its the aqaua clear ones that have pouches in them) which i think is cr*ap so thats why i got a better one to run with it.

now it seems i have another problem. have just done a water change and tested water after an hour and a bit and my amonia is still high (0.1) did one last nite and was the same. the nitrite is trace-0.1 (isnt quite pink but is a hint of colur there) am thinking that i have upset my tank by taking filter out and isnt help that i have a couple more fish in there then i should hence upgrade, anyway im now thinking of putting 3 or 4 fish in new tank (set up since sat with old filter running alongside new one) as surely they cant be any worse off as the new tank is the same if not slighlty better results and this would give my 30 ltr a fighting chance of getting back on top again! fish are at surface of water and gulp from time to time and are feeding well-have reduced feeding to minable.

I love keeping my fish and have always enjoyed it but am now at the point of thinking is this worth it? am really worried bout them? i guess everyone goes through bad patches when trying something new but am at my wits end!!! :-(

do a water change, and leave it to cycle still.

could add some filter start? get everything going again!

don't quit either ;)

You could, like you have said, do a fish in cycle, id read up on that though :)

GOOD LUCK!

thanx gonna need it!
have read up bout fish cycling and although im not keen on doing it i think i stand a greater chance of losing my whole stock if i dont!

as for filter start i agree!

I just got done doing a fish-in cycle on my 10 gallon tank. The main thing to do when cycling a tank with fish is to keep the ammonia and nitrites down bellow .25ppm by doing water changes.

You are going to end up doing at least 1 water change a day to maintain low levels of ammonia and,or nitrite.

Test the water everyday. Eventually the ammonia will go to 0 and then you will start getting a nitrite spike. once the ammonia and nitrite go to 0 and you start getting nitrate readings, you will know you are nearing the end of the cycle.

Hope everything works out for you!

Test your tap water as well, some water supplies have traces of ammonia.
