I can't believe my daughter sometimes. she meddles and messes with everything.... deep breath

My little angel has put liquid soap from the bathroom in my sons tank and quite a lot it seems and most of the fish are dead. a Distochidus Sexiatus that I was growing on to my bigger tank 10 silvertip tetras he had have all gone and a couple of platies!!

Not surprisingly the Channa Orientalis which were in their temporarily until I get them their own house are as right as rain as are some corys in there

I've just syphoned out all the water and sand. The water came out all frothy from the syphon. I'm rinsing the sand and will do that over next couple of days before it goes back in. I've had to clean and rinse the tank with freshwater and the heater and filter. I'm going to have to refill tank with water from my other tanks with some clean in as well and I've put media filter from other tank in the filter.

I assume that I will lose further fish but don't see what different I can do for now.

I'm gutted about the Distochodus as he was one of my favourite fish

Kids - nightmares at times :grr:

Apart from thoroughly cleaning everything, there isnt much more you can do.

Sorry you lost your fish - :rip:

1. this isnt the first time she did it?
2. how old is she
3. if she is very small why was she left unnatended?

i get it if a baby like my 1 1/2 year old nefew did it cause nobody was watching him, it would be my fault. but an older kid like my daughter who is 7, actually has her own tank and feeds them herself and helps me with water changes and tank cleaning. knows that soap would get them sick.

soooo did your kid do it cause she is too small to under stand, and in that case why wernt u watching her and how did a baby reach the tank, also a small child could drown in a tank, hey anything can happen.

or is this a older child who did it intentialy and if so and this has happened before, why didnt you move the fish to a safe place where the child cant harm them or diciplin the child???

i know you are upset about what happened but this seems to be partly the fault of whatever adult was susposto be keeping an eye on the kid. its your responsbility to take care of you pets so who is too blame?? what happened if she trys to feed another animal somthing dangerous,,, or eats it herself????

Aww I hate to add insult to injury, but he's kinda got a point! Dont get me wrong, I have a todder and they can be little buggers, but how did this actually happen?!

no it ain't first time, first time was about 6 months ago when she chucked fish food in. lesson learnt fish food moved out of reach

she is 3 and has had contact with the tank since that time

tank is in my 6 yr old sons room its been in there since his 2nd birthday, children have different personalities, he is ery responsible she is a little minx

I am surprised by a couple of your comments which I find patronising Azulfire as you have children, because you cannot watch over children all the time 24/7.
This was done in about 3 mins if that. she'd gone to bathroom and obviously meddled within that time.

the tank has a stand and she can reach it because she is a little girl who is very capable and independant in that she goes to toilet herself, dresses herself, feeds herself and brushes her teeth etc but part of her personality and close family and friends are amused by it is that she is a little meddler etc., The tank is in my sons room as he is very responsible and has had it since he was two with no incidents.

Needless to say she has been disciplined and is now in her room in bed and is very sorry etc etc but she is a little girl and I'm sure she will meddle again with something else. To say that incidents like this with young children should never happen is a little far fetched especially from a parent

and having a toddler you will apreciate that they get up to things in moments which are not always preventable. If your toddler is very young I am sure you will appreciate this in next few years

LOL- the stuff my toddler has got up to is quite shocking! Kinda thinking that my little one is 21months and couldnt open a bubble bath lid etc, but a kid of say, 5, should know better. I forgot about the 3 year old middle stage where they con you into thinking they are soooo grown up, but actually are just plotting the next hit!
If it makes you feel better, my daughter 'fed' her dinner into the controller slots in my partners xbox recently. Oooops, still havnt had the guts to tell him!

I have to agree with you, I mean kids cant be watched 24/7. I would say no one is to blame, i dont think she did it on purpose and if she did #### it seems like fun when your 3. Im 21 i remember being a little SOB when my parents werent around to watch me every waking minute. I one time climbed the counter couldnt have been more then 4 took the big container of oatmeal out. Looked like fish flake fed some to my pet frog who seemed unphased by it. I was told that you couldnt feed them a lot so sticking to that rule i put only a few pieces in then proceed to the backyard where i dumped the rest of the oatmeal in the pool and proceeded to take an oatmeal bath! Sorry about your fish! Gotta Love kids!

i am a mom by the way, i know i sound harsh and no child can be watched every second but i have several family members in the health medicine feild and know personaly how dangerous household products can be. having someone come home for an emt shift at the hostptail and telling you how some little kid got posioned from dish washer detergent isnt a good memory. if at that age my daughter did get in to somthing she shouldnt have i then removed the object fro her reach, like the time she pulled a bottle of baby lotion form her diaper changing table and got naked, greasher her self from head to toe and when i found her i couldnt grab her for almost 15 minits, it was like catching a greased piglet....

and from personal experence my daughter was a devil, not mean, just the kind of kid who figured out how to stack the kitchen chairs and all her toys to get on top of the refigerator for some cookies. kids will do stupid things, repetidly.

soooo every thing that couldnt be locked in a cabnit was locked in a room that she wasnot aloud in. maby the fish tank should have been moved to where she couldnt get to it, or fastened witha safty lock so she cant open it, what if she trys it again and falls in......

safty locks on cabnits, medicine cabnits, locks on pool gates, certian items just not keep in a childs living space, its realy just a game of what to do before they get to it.
